"Today was a Difficult Day," said Pooh.
There was a pause.
"Do you want to talk about it?" asked Piglet.
"No," said Pooh after a bit. "No, I don't think I do."
"That's okay," said Piglet, and he came and sat beside his friend.
"What are you doing?" asked Pooh.
"Nothing, really," said Piglet. "Only, I know what Difficult Days are like. I quite often don't feel like talking about it on my Difficult Days either.
"But goodness," continued Piglet, "Difficult Days are so much easier when you know you've got someone there for you. And I'll always be here for you, Pooh."
And as Pooh sat there, working through in his head his Difficult Day, while the solid, reliable Piglet sat next to him quietly, swinging his little legs...he thought that his best friend had never been more right."
A.A. Milne
Sending thoughts to those having a Difficult Day today and hope you have your own Piglet to sit beside you
Meet the woman behind early @NASA_Landsat images: Dr. Valerie L. Thomas.
A self-taught programmer, she managed the development of Landsat image processing. Her work in the '70s helped show that satellite imagery could be used to support agriculture. https://go.nasa.gov/3EJMPgT #BHM

We are amid a geomagnetic storm caused by the first of two Earth-directed CMEs. Last night, the aurora was visible as far south as Oregon and Pennsylvania! It will likely continue the next two nights, so if you live in the northern US, Canada, or northern Europe, check the night skies tonight and tomorrow night! I have more info, with photos from last night and info on photographing the northern lights in my article here: https://www.lwpetersen.com/photo-blog/aurora-borealis-february-26-2023/
Apparently there's going to be a new Three Musketeers movie with a Black D'Artagnan, and the usual suspects are doing the usual howling about wokeness and ahistoricity and so on. So here's your regular reminder the The Three Musketeers was written by a Black man. Dumas' father was the son of an enslaved African woman and a French Marquis (not a pretty story there), and he rose to become a hero of the French Revolutionary Wars and a General-in-Chief in the French army.
I'm not against science, exactly, but I'm never going to be one of these "I believe in science" people. How am I going to believe in something that still says my existence is "disordered"?
Ok #EnergyMastodon, what's the best place to learn about decarbonizing air travel? I'm thinking SAFs, electric planes, etc...
Whatcha got?
America’s legal system today
I want to practice law:
—You need a 4 year Bachelors, take the LSAT, then a 3 year JD, then pass the BAR, buy malpractice insurance, & total cost is ~$300K
I want to enforce the law:
—Here’s paid 13-week training & a gun
I want to write the law:
—No qualifications needed and a billionaire can buy you a seat
Immune debt is absurd on the face of it. Idk when you think these lockdowns happened but if they did (where I lived in the US there was never a single lockdown) they happened THREE YEARS AGO. Vaccines were out 2 years ago at which point the dems gleefully instructed everyone tear off their masks and be free to suck down each others germs.
Why did this wave of other infections not happen until mid-late 2022 if immune debt is a thing? I'll tell you what did happen in 2022: governments everywhere decided to ignore covid and pretend it was over and a fuckton of people who had been staying safe from covid got 1-3 covid infections in ONE YEAR, and suddenly previously healthy adults started dying of rsv.
Maybe it's a lot more likely covid fucks up your immune system like it does everything else than that this is caused by lockdowns that happened THREE FUCKING YEARS AGO
There's a lot of disinformation claiming "mask mandates don't work on the population level." These lies ignore the nuance: even when broad mask mandates were in effect, #COVID was still being spread in social spaces and at home when masks came off. Masks can't work in spaces they aren't being worn.
For specific spaces where people are able to wear masks continuously like in hospitals, on public transport, and yes, even schools, studies show mask mandates are effective in mitigating #COVID spread. They serve a key role keeping essential spaces open and accessible to all.
