Me in social media: “Here is the data that tells us #COVID19 risks are rising. And here are the studies that show COVID can damage your chronic health. Please be careful.”
My friends: “Here's a photo of me in a crowded restaurant, then attending a crowded concert, then going to a conference, and finally getting to get together with my family including my aging, immunocompromised parents.”
Why do I bother? What good is monitoring, knowledge, and data if everyone's just going to ignore it?
You may have seen it on #Biorxiv but, after adding data on #Fibroblast-tracks in #3D environments (and after paying 4151 €), here is the story published in @ScienceAdvances 🎉:
Fibroblasts generate topographical cues that steer cancer cell migration
I wish I didn't have to tell you about this again, but I do. It's not being reported much in the news — and you know why?
Because it's not 'new' (the origin of the word 'news'), it's old. This has been going on for months now, and corporate news outlets are simply tired of reporting it. But it is still happening.
Canada's boreal forests are burning up.
At least 1100 fires are still active, more than 700 out of control. Over 13 million hectares have been burned so far, with no end in sight. It's an unprecedented climate and environmental disaster.

Is academia hostile to families?
"As is the case for many parents in academia, parental leave has played a major part in the trajectories of our lives and scientific careers"
In contrast to Canada, "the United States has no federally mandated paid parental leave."
Early career academics are often poorly paid and are required to relocate frequently, causing obvious major challenges for young families.

Victorian COVID deaths rise again.
"45 Victorians have died this week from COVID, up from 39 last week. It comes after a Melbourne study showed permanent public mask-wearing would reduce mortality rates by 25% over 12 months."
Explore ~14 billion years of time in this fascinating graphical summary of events from the Big Bang to the present day by talented artist Pablo Carlos Budassi.
Beginning at center of the spiral, every billion years is represented by a 90-degree stretch, with the exception of the last 500 million years represented as the last 90-degree stretch for greater detail. https://www.visualcapitalist.com/cp/nature-timespiral-the-evolution-of-earth-from-the-big-bang/ #art #science
"Two-thirds of the associate editors of the Journal of Biogeography, a Wiley title, have resigned"
At-issue is the journal's $4800 fee to make articles freely accessible.
Other issues include plans to make "the journal entirely open access, increase its volume, & automatically refer rejected manuscripts to other Wiley journals"
“It’s disappointing Wiley is not engaged. They would benefit in the long run. It’s that simple.”

Benchmarking scATAC-seq
"Hence, an unbiased comparison of the use of different scATAC-seq methods on reference samples, and the resulting ‘benchmark data’, will allow researchers to make an informed method selection when considering scATAC-seq. Our study aimed to reduce ‘information asymmetry’ by equipping researchers with a comprehensive benchmarking of scATAC-seq tools, to increase the quality of data while reducing costs through informed decision-making."
People are getting paid for #publishing #AI-written #books, in an #author's name, when in fact the author did not, and knew nothing about this happening.
Then, when the author tries to do something about it to stop this obvious #abuse, they are told no.
'While extensive research has focused on mitochondrial dNTP homeostasis due to its defects being associated with various mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) depletion and deletion syndromes, the investigation of mitochondrial rNTP homeostasis has received relatively little attention.'

A massive fire that is burning in California and Nevada is creating “fire whirls” as fire crews continue to battle the flames.
The York Fire that started in California’s Mojave National Preserve on Friday is more than 80,000 acres wide and crossed into Nevada on Sunday. The Mojave National Preserve said that the fire was about 23 percent contained as of Tuesday morning.
