🚨Despite multiple studies showing the positive effect of minocycline against stroke and other neurological dysfunction, its effects in COVID-19-induced stroke and post-stroke-induced neurodegeneration and neurological disorders remain unclear.

Okay #introduction / #introductions time!!
My interests revolve around systems of subcellular organisation, from a #cellbiology and #biophysics perspective. I’m particularly focussed on #MembraneContactSites between organelles in funky cells like #neurons. I use a bunch of #microscopy techniques (#ElectronMicroscopy / #SuperResolution) alongside in vitro reconstitution systems to study contact site biology. The #EndoplasmicReticulum is the best organelle…this is a hill I am prepared to die on.
Activity on mathstodon.xyz is growing. We’re looking for a few people to help handle moderation reports. We had about 50 reports last month.
We’re only looking for help with the easy stuff - spammers, hate speech, etc.
We are particularly looking for different perspectives: non-UK timezone, protected characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, sexuality different to ours.
If we know you, and you trust yourself to keep your cool, and you’d like to help, please get in touch.

Hello #ScienceMastodon! I am an assistant professor in the MIT Department of Biology with our lab based at the Koch Institute. We build tools for high-throughput functional genomics in mice in order to understand and modulate regenerative capacity across mammalian tissues.
My (non representative) poll showed that people wouldn't accept a #dictator even when the dictator might align with one's values. Yet this is the reality in many tech companies. #twitter has seen a great example of why you shouldn't except a dictatorship even if your values align with the dictator's. Because there's no guarantee that a dictator will keep aligning with your values.
Having run my own test mastodon server, I can tell you that boosting is REALLY important. That's how posts propagate between servers that are not federated together.
I may get a bit technical, and it can be hard to describe but it's something like this:
Let's say that you have 2 servers, A and B that are not connected. They have their own federated timelines that is vastly different.
let's assume they have their users @a@A and @b@B that are mutuals. If user @a@A sees something interesting on theirs federated timeline and boosts it, user @b@B will see that on their own home page. But more importantly server B will now know about and download that post, and everyone else on B server will be able to see that post on their own federated timeline!
And that's why you boost, guys! It helps posts to spread.
Replicating experiments:
New preprint considers the “minimum viable experiment to replicate.”
“In this paper, we introduce the idea of a minimum viable experiment that needs to be identified in practice for replication results to be clearly interpretable.”

The top reasons graduate students are leaving academia 🏃♂️
1. The funding climate is discouraging
2. Too competitive/lack of jobs
3. Lack of work-life balance
"Less than half (48%) of respondents say that they would prefer, ultimately, to work in academia. That’s down from 56% in 2019"
"I don’t want this kind of life"
N = 3,200 international students that responded to a Nature survey
Idea 💡. Small fragments of DNA can work as logical gates. If the same is true for RNA, then the RNA of a virus could have encoded within an if and only if kind of logical structure. An early step of viral infection is the degradation of the host mRNA. Fragments that resulted from the degradation could interact with viral RNA changing it's structure and facilitating it's replication. Such mechanism could explain the seasonality of viral diseases.
My #introduction to #mastodon:
I'm a biostatistician researching #statistics #biostatistics #epidemiology #publichealth. I primarily work on #bayesian methods for spatio-temporal & environmental #epi and #publichealth surveillance -- often for overcoming challenges related to imperfect data & small areas.
Most of my work is in #substanceuse & the opioid syndemic #hiv #HCV #overdose.
I've also been working on disease mapping models for environmental exposures associated with #ClimateChange.

Once upon a linear time, aliens 👽 came and gave us the gift of immortality.
But over the eons, as our minds expanded, our bodies withered. So we enlarged our craniums and tinkered with our bodies. Replaced our worn out eyes and blood with a black synthetic.
And evolved into the aliens, 👽 who traveled back in time...
to give us immortality. 🙃
