@tfardet well, you are pointing to sources, but they mention 3 examples. 2 are of flushing excreta to water bodies (a bad idea not known to be in vogue in pre-colonial times in Asia or Egypt or South America); 1 of those examples atleast uses bath water for flushing, which modern sanitation systems have regressed from. The 3rd example didn't move sewage to water bodies.

@tfardet Sanitation is a red herring evolved out of medieval Europe's history of dumping feces out the window. Did either pre-Islamic Egypt's cities or pre-Latin South America's cities have sanitation problems?

@tfardet Actually, I was not sure if the pre-colonization past had been discounted as a source of good ideas. It is clear that it shouldn't be. Post-colonial ideas like mixing lots of clean water with feces are obviously terrible ideas, while the Indus Valley civilization thrived precisely because it valued critical resources like water and didn't condone mixing with feces.
@OcapiProgramme the ruins of the Indus Valley Harappan civilization showed how the city's human waste was routed to outside the city, no excess water involved. do you want go back 3000 years in time?
@0 people unaffected by price rises are in positions to trigger price rises; why would they only be doing it uncaringly and not maliciously?

@kensanata Well, if I were a paranoid person, I'd suspect a man-in-the-middle attack. Or an overprotective router that thinks it's stopping you from leeching Wi-Fi.
Try using a VPN so you bypass the hotel and see if you still get the warning. If the warning is always there, then you may have done something that messed up your fingerprint calculations. Any SSH or crypto library updates on your laptop since the last uneventful connection?
Of course, this is all guesswork :/

The finance sector does have a very important job: distribute tasks and resources. That's capitalism's and finance's only purpose.
It does that one job remarkably crappily. The worst system in human history (if it ends up killing the planet). It's wasteful, rigged, leeching, unfair, meaningless, overly abstracted, destructive, inefficient, evil. Crypto is an even worse version of same.
To replace it we need to know that it does have a purpose, being a resource distributor and labor organizer, and make something that does that in an actual good way.
Capitalism is in a runaway feedback hellscape because selling is itself being sold. Ad firms are advertising and competing. Competion and consumtion is being meta-competed and meta-consumed. It's evolution squared. Who can be the best seller on the cinder?

@kjetil_kilhavn @pluralistic as an American who lives in Europe and has experienced the health system here, this is absolutely true. Here at least the you get something for the taxes you pay. I'm not a financially rich person, but I live a higher quality of life here than I would in the US.
@susannah don't you think there is a chance that preferring (English) text to a/v involves a bias towards able-bodied people (Westerners)? admittedly, text can be accessed via Braille or read out, whereas audio can't be rendered to text as feasibly.
@susannah would you please elaborate? I am curious about this, since I recently started thinking a/v is "better" for non-techies while text is better for machines (something we shouldn't go out of our way to optimize for).

@dredmorbius @pluralistic I will never forget Ello, largely because about once a month I get a message that says "SvetlanaHotMILF348 is following you on Ello." I log on and report/block SvetlanaHotMILF348, only to have to repeat the operation a month later with CandieeLuvvs69 etc. And so on.
That someone apparently believes that you might be able to make money by follow-spamming on Ello really demonstrates that there are no limits to human optimism.
