@futurebird ...which entailed "microdoses" of melatonin. Well, you can no longer put "microdose" into Google search and not get a flood of results about psychedelics.
All this is why I am so hardcore about bookmarkers, and save every damn thing I might want to see again some day.

I will forever be haunted by the time I read in the paper that installing secure fare collection terminals in every bus was going to cost so much that the cost was not expected to be recouped from fares for at least the next decade. Losing money was literally a part of the plan, and they still did it just to make sure that some people couldn't afford to ride the bus.
@dx in a similar vein, imagine if #renewables were given the subsidies that #FossilFuels receive!

@dx, a friend of mine has once made an interesting argument about a certain industrial plant switching from #rail transport to road transport.
The numbers were pretty clear: when they used railroads, they were charged according to the maintenance costs. After switching to roads, taxpayers paid for the damage caused by their heavy trucks.
@dx #Vienna provides a practical plan for how to get to that point: around half of residents have a 1€/day "Jahreskarte" year ticket, so we already have the feeling of transit without tickets. This has been expanded to the #Austria -wide "Klimaticket", which is the same idea, but for all railways and public transit in the whole country. I think this approach is much more politically possible than trying to just flip systems to have no fares.
In Tamilnadu state, India, we got free bus for all women.
It bring great changes on women life and how a government should see the public transport.
@dx @Doomed_Daniel cars are an unnecessary evil. Let's build the world we want to live in for tomorrow.
Free public transit funded by a massive toll on drivers and parking. In fact all paid parking should be owned by the government. Your parking garage is dead weight loss and only necessary due to the failure of cars.
“The reason most public transportation is seen as ‘losing’ money is precisely because it charges for trips. If you don't charge fares, suddenly it can't ‘lose’ money. It just costs money, the same as the roads.”
This random comment has given me my new favourite argument for removing fares from public transit.
I am constantly thinking "I really want to hear what David Graeber would thinking about such-and-so." Super sucks that he died. We weren't done with him.
I'm honestly at this point completely confused why the fediverse tolerates... any applications that aren't Mastodon at all. Every ActivityPub participating server caches data from other servers, and every ActivityPub client connects to the APIs to display profile information in different ways. In fact, most Mastodon mobile clients cache data too!
I can't wrap my head around the technical difference between "oh cool" and "bad techbro" that some folks seem to have defined.
@nytpu I don't know what specific event you're referring to, but considering how many redesigns I've seen that claim to improve UX but make it worse for experienced users, maybe that's for the better?
@BrentToderian they had drained a river to put a road in its place? The hubris!
@rbreich found/buy your own company and give it a try. If you're right, you'll save a ton of money and operate a better bottom line.
@rbreich
The usual excuse is "competition" (If we don't pay them astronomical salaries and bonuses, talented CEOs will go "elsewhere"). However, it's not clear where they would go. CEOs in all other developed countries are paid very handsomely but definitely less than American CEOs. Maybe they'll get better paid jobs on Mars when #ElonMusk moves there? It's a racket.
@rbreich not to mention the millions they pay politicians to keep minimum wage 7$ an hour 😑 they could seriously use that money to raise the minimum wage. It’s more about keeping the masses poor than spending.
Do not seize the day. This will startle the day and may cause it to becomes aggressive and give you a nasty bite.
Instead approach the day calmly without making eye contact, pet it gently, and slowly enfold it in a careful embrace
If the day shows any signs of resistance to being engaged with, it is likely to turn on you. Back off and return to bed.
@hq1 @tetrislife Yeah, the binary matching is great.
I've seen similar things in #Lisp, but it all amounts to pretty much the same semantics and a fairly similar interface (ignoring that it's parens & more parens instead of colons & angles, anyway).
Binary parsing simply shouldn't be attempted with non-declarative syntax, it's way too error-prone in comparison.
