@dataKnightmare After a #Zotero test yesterday I must admit I'm quite impressed. Importing ~750 ISBN was very fast & hassle-free, the duplicate management is really great and the free tier for the cloud sync is enough for me & works like a charm.
I was disappointed this morning to discover the only mobile app is for iOS, nothing for Android, but the web interface is mobile friendly so I can consult my synched library on my phone as long as I'm in range of a cell tower.

It now seems likely that "WebAssembly" is going to be widely used beyond web. Maybe it needs a less web-focused name.

I suggest renaming it "Conway" in honor Mel Conway who is likely the first (1958) to describe the design of a universal intermediate language.

@shriramk @WSJ The headline should have been 'booty'. Imperial Booty has a nice ring to it.

@Cbfoley oh, they stole food from other nations too? :-( during World War 2, they triggered a famine in India that starved a minimum of 6 million people to death, not to mention livestock.

I like Emacs because it is an immediately useful programming environment (a text editor) that grows with you for decades. There is always something new and interesting, something social because other people contribute stuff, helping each other to adapt the tool to our human needs and not some big corporation. Of course it’s weird to a lousy web browser in your text editor – but it’s also a programming tool that can be used to modify itself until it reads mail, browses the web, is a chat client, music player and what not. And that is empowering in that small way that makes me happy. It doesn’t help me overthrow the capitalist world order but it helps me disappear from the surveillance capitalist hamster wheel.

We are releasing the well-poisoning machine, because if we don't do it first, someone else with even worse morals might do it faster.

By being the first people to poison the well, we can know exactly what kind of toxins will be in the water such that we understand the symptoms when we inevitably make the whole village sick from it.

Of course this has prompted our competitors to fire their ethics people and also poison the well even faster, but such is the inevitable march of progress!

#solarpunk #gamedesign idea:

Survival game where you learn to be a part of an ecosystem and slowly abandon your unsustainable "tech tree" replacing it with sustainable, local solutions.

---

A lot of games are trying to replicate very expansionist core loops, be it Minecraft's Factorios and so on, which see the player as a force acting on the environment / ecosystem, not working together with it.

Why not change it?

@simulo he is also inaccurate (disingenious?) in using Linux as a free-s/w that rejected GPLv3 - Linux happens to use GPLv2, but is open source! It is unique in open source in having got corporates hooked into it, unlike the BSD Unices - Apple wouldn't have paid BSD developers their due for the kernel it based OS X on, but Redhat et al pay Linux devs - I don't know if that is just down to the GPL!

And free software licenses may yet have some role to play in prohibiting Copilot ...

@simulo those freedoms mean something to some people, and people to whom it doesn't mean f*** (like the blog author) are immaterial - if she/he were talking about the law, she'd/he'd be saying "the law means f*** to everybody (i.e. me extrapolated) because everybody hasn't filed a suit in court".

An example comes to mind: Con Kolivas improved the desktop performance of Linux by tweaking the kernel scheduler, and he apparently is a dentist!

It's not what this quote is about, but I've never read a better diagnosis of cancel culture, its erosion of solidarity, and its way of reducing activism to a bloodsport, grist for the mills of social media DataFarms.

How many #Prolog programmers does it take to change a lightbulb?

No

(I hope the two of you who got the joke enjoyed it)

@b33fpebble Wile it's easiest conclusion it gives consumers a wrong hope that EU with their GDPR is some what superior in handling their data, which is wrong corps do not need data per se, what they need is metadata to train their models so as long as they never store data that being automatically collected by networking systems and only use to train models to predict your next move they are fine. Your data/metadata is only safe in your own hands. #privacy #selfhosted

@nixCraft as an admirer of Plan9 amd Forth, I have to wonder if C is the only choice to implement systems (even with string-as-return-value-of-main etc.)

This should be criminal

Dpreview is the best repository of camera information on the internet and it isn't archived in it's entirety *anywhere.*

Decades of reviews, forum conversations knowledge/troubleshooting/mentoring about photography/cameras/& accessories

"Amazon is shutting down DPReview, the go-to camera reviews website / It’s unclear what will happen to the nearly 25 years’ worth of reviews, news, and photography that have come from the site." - TheVerge

Hey, this is for everyone who nearly got into a pointless online argument but thought better of it and let it go: Good job, you did great!

Andre Gorz was Right: "why is it that what is perfectly obvious in the case of the beaches is not generally acknowledged to be the case for transportation? Like the beach house, doesn’t a car occupy scarce space? Doesn’t it deprive the others who use the roads (pedestrians, cyclists, streetcar and bus drivers)? Doesn’t it lose its use value when everyone uses his or her own? And yet there are plenty of politicians who insist that every family has the right to at least one car and that it’s up to the “government” to make it possible for everyone to park conveniently, drive easily in the city, and go on holiday at the same time as everyone else, going 70 mph on the roads to vacation spots."
