The group of people who are trying to divide the fediverse seem to have reached a new low.. They have a tool that lists how many instances block a particular instance, but it is highly manipulative.
For starters it is hand curated.. so they exclude blocks against their own instances and only includes instances they actually dislike.
Worse yet they curate a list ordered by "most blocked".. problem is they use the number of instances that block. They game the system by having large number of single-user instances. So instances in the top 50 may only be blocked by a few hundred people but still appear as if the blocks are significant....
This is why we need transparency, its why we need the https://UFoI.org
@tw @kjr @thor @aral For the last month or so, I've been monitoring qoto's local feed for offensive comments or hate speech and have literally not found a single one, or even seen a boost of questionable content. It seems that a significant percentage of fediverse administrators are happy to throw a large number of innocent users under the bus because they don't like qoto's admin. It's not a great look.
@Bro666 @austinkocher @Mastodon
Or even better: everyone with its own domain like it was with blogs you can follow with RSS feeds.
Do you know what Mastodon did wrong? Too many users on instances that blocks entire other instances for ideological reasons and their users are not aware (or fooled into thinking their instance is kindly blocking "bigotry", "fascism" etc).
#UFoI This is why the "United Federation of Instances" initiative recently started: https://ufoi.org/
To understand the size of this "war" between people fragmenting the Fediverse and people trying to stop this trend, be aware the a person from the latter side was harrassed by people from the former to the point of having a seizure when was messaged with the image of a man violently killing a woman and the text "kill yourself".
Is this whole thing worse than Twitter? If you consider the impact of Twitter on the whole society maybe no, but from a human point of view what these Mastodon pioneers did is much worse.

"[Qoto was] defederated for many reasons (some receipts attached) that had nothing to do with that users, and everything to do with their moderation policies or rather lack thereof."
I find this fascinating... "receipts" paraded about in fact show sensible moderation policy, rather than a "lack" of anything. Is it possible claiming "receipts" hoping for no discussion of them or actual reading of them takes place? Looks suspicious, like a bad actor move. How does #UFoI "legitimize" this?
I was gonna start a website called MoreWrong to parody the "rationalist" website LessWrong, with randos calling themselves "AI researchers" without an iota of a track record, and joke about air strikes on GPU clusters. Then I realized that I'd get arrested rather having profiles and platforms on TIME magazine, NY Times and such, since I'm not a white dude.
Long read. Fantastic perspectives on programming, software, architecture, teams, computing ... in a Q&A from Forth land

To me this is a bug, not a feature, and like the poor UX of DMs, a consequence of failing to be clear on whether it's a SM or a SN platform. It seems self-evident to me that if we put hashtags in a post, it's because we *want* it to be widely discoverable. Yet we are denied this sensible SM function by the paranoia of people who are using it for SN.
#Streams (and #Hubzilla), a featureful base for social media and more!

I would love more people to know about Plausible Analytics (@plausible). So many great things coming together: small team, tech choice, open source, privacy focused, self-funded, highly transparent. Much respect for what they do.
@strypey Mastodon-compatible? No alternative is, I guess, based on all that I keep reading about the looseness of the AP spec and all the trouble reported in Hubzilla/Streams forums regarding connections with AP accounts. Mike Macgirvin elaborates there on each issue, and makes sufficient interoperability with Mastodon sound impossible for an AP system with groups (e.g. Streams).
@strypey since Stallman's cancellation, I haven't seen any drive from FSF, so their hosting an announcement doesn't imply merit. It has been mostly adjacent individuals continuing to plow their lone furrows in libre tech. The pro-cancel folks have made impressive strides in tech but mostly in me-too projects.
@strypey this seems to be a troll fork, aiming for something unrealistic but high-sounding to split the project (and inconsistent, if, for example, they use Debian that now ships non-free blobs by default). #LibreBoot policy page makes it abundantly clear why and how they allow non-free blobs https://libreboot.org/news/policy.html
As an outsider, I have seen Leah Rowe's project being targeted surreptiously like this more than once.
@tanyawillhite @thestrangelet aren't reversing/parking sensors mandatory in your corner of the world? Or new-fangled reversing camera instead?
