@stux @The_Augusto we know they have a horrid track record on privacy, they have a horrid track record on moderation, and they have a horrid track record on “embracing” open protocols to kill them off. Each of this alone would be sufficient to preemptively defederate. All of them together even more so. Exactly what do you expect to be different this time?

Facebook

What if awful people are owning the server of the recipient of a message? If you hate Google you can’t really write an email to a Gmail user. Your email will be stored on Google servers, ready for all the things you hate them for: data mining, AI training, targeted ads, and so on.

The same is true for recipients of posts on the fediverse. If Facebook enters the fediverse and one of their users follows you, they are a recipient of your messages. Your instance will send their instance a copy of your message and it will be stored on Facebook servers, ready for the things you hate them for: data mining, AI training, targeted ads, and so on.

Now, this is of course true for every single instance. Any one of them could be a data siphon for corporates or agencies. But in the case of Project 92 it's going to be for a corporation that's defying the law since 2012, more or less.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me for more than ten years, no need to trust and verify. There is no trust left. In fact, there's only suspicion and anger left, I'd argue.

@swansinflight@mastodon.nz
I do wonder what all this noise is about. Google Chat was on XMPP, and chose to block everybody else after a while. Likewise, after a whie, Meta might well block the fediverse (of which they are not going to be a good citizen of anyway).
@stux @The_Augusto

@stux @JoeGrowling I think you're cool Stux but I will burn down anything that touches those capitalist douchebags who, I should remind you, are the exact reason why we had to create this place to begin with. If they weren't vile, we'd all be using corporate social media right now.

@jose @stux They can't serve you ads on your instance. They can already extract data and surveil you as is because the fediverse isn't private.

@stux If US and EU antitrust / competitiveness authorities cannot secure compliance from Facebook and Zuckerberg for existing and longstanding orders, what makes you think a rag-tag bunch of Fediverse admins will fare better?

Facebook are manifestly bad-faith and untrustworthy actors. Preblock, now.

Facebook is a repeat violator at the FTC. There was a consent decree that goes back close to a decade, which the FTC in 2019 found that they violated. The recent news suggests that they may have also been in violation of this latest consent order. And that is really prompting a step back and a close look at: What does it take to make sure that firms across the board are actually complying with the law? ... I think when you have companies that are repeatedly before a law-enforcement agency, you need to ask serious questions about whether these companies are recidivist and whether they have a challenge in abiding by existing laws.

At the very least, a precondition for any cooperation would be full compliance with existing antitrust actions, sanctions, consent orders, and the like, for a period at least as long as noncompliance (so, four years in the case of the 2019 order).

There's a tendency to ignore the fact that the US has also waged aggressive wars, including those against Afghanistan and Iraq. Iraq was a secular democracy before the US invasion, an inconvenient fact often overlooked in the lionization of US military aggression as a defence of "democracy".

Aggressive war isn't the only tool US rulers have used to bring down democratically elected leaders unfriendly to their interests:

Google just emailed me to let me know that "Album Archive" is going away and my data will be deleted in a month.

Album Archive is apparently the dumping ground for images that were in _other_ products Google has already killed, such as Google+ and Hangouts.

They're killing the place where images from killed products went. It's just beyond parody, incredible.

@captaincalliope there's no motive to grow and no employees to push an agenda that very few on the fediverse share. this is the future of the web, commercial impulses stripped away and the empty promises of capitalism spurned.

I used to have a host in SEA (I’m in SEA too) but I don’t remember which of the many hosts I’ve used it was. XD

I think your best bet is usually to look for a host with a location in Singapore.

@thisismissem @Zach777 happy that popped up :-) I am no fan of its UX among other thungs, but it is a different take on architecture, in that lemmy-like or pixelfed-like services are plug-ins, and rich authentication and authorization options (basically, account-level moderation) and service building blocks are the core.

In my defence, the matrix folks have said from the start that their eventual goal is to move everyone onto community-hosted homeservers and shut down the matrix.org one. John Mastodon has no such plans for mastodon.social.

We can already interact with Lemmy, KBin and Friendica groups using a Mastodon account. The UX could use work, but proper group support is coming.

> Lemmy allowing log-in via any AP account might go a long way

This is totally doable. All the AP app devs just need to implement the Client-to-Server part of the spec, instead of only supporting the Mastodon API as a de facto standard.

@strypey

Add the lack of and it appears that the alternative to the emperor-with-no-clothes is not wearing much either.

I shouldn't be complaining, "we" atleast have this much. But it isn't clear that one client can integrate , , , and ... which makes all of them being based on a technical detail. Lemmy allowing log-in via any AP account might go a long way.

@strypey I really feel like this exodus is putting a spotlight on the #fediverse and the interoperability of it all compared to what happened with #twitter , but it may just be the order that things happened that made the difference.

Also a takeaway for anyone reading this: you are not legally required to sign a severance/settlement agreement with your employer. The company will always try to use your lack of legal knowledge to convince you to sign away your right to sue or talk about what the company did to you. They will typically attach a very short arbitrary deadline to deter you from seeking a lawyer. Don't fall for it, never sign any legal agreement without running it by a lawyer first.

I recently learned that WebKit is the only website rendering engine allowed on iThings. FireFox for #iThings is just a UI layer on top of WebKit. So they're essentially doing exactly what MS got clobbered with antitrust action for; bundling browser with OS.

Does anybody store links as ... entries in their device's addressbook? Store a "Website" field, no "Phone" field, and keywords in the name fields. It might even be standards-compliant, and hence as easy to export and back up as your contacts. And your contacts search will be usable for bookmark search.

I have recently started doing this, and don't yet know how it will work out.
