@uliwitness @jbzfn @collin He sure did! And then he hired some of the people from Xerox. Not to mention everything he and the team at Apple did to vastly improve over the demo they saw at Xerox.

I can’t enough recommend folklore.org as it has first hand accounts on so so much from around that era.

MS on the other hand just copied, and did so poorly.

@allenwb
I'm sympathetic. My problem with "personal" is that everything we do is a collaboration. Not strictly personal. This is a small difference in wiki. Anyone who sees a solution can see the context in which it applies.

@stavvers @Jennifer_Pinkley "We are absolutely convinced that wind is really the next big thing that will radically change and maybe revolutionize shipping."

They're going to invent wheels next.

@galdor
Erlang fan here. Where could I read more about a takeover by banks? I thought Elixir was used across industries e.g. Toyota was using it.
@djrmarques

@alex @Sandra

If you zoom out, maybe cloning existing tech was the mistake. Why did need to clone anything beyond cc, ld and libc? Instead of creating e.g. an Eiffel clone in Sather, they could have doubled down on, say, 1 Lisp (GCL, Emacs Lisp, Guile, whatever) and got to building applications on top.

In this smartphone and webapp age, we still have lots of F/OSS clones of commercial services.

Maybe we need(ed) many more well-thought-out projects like / .

@alex @Sandra I guess the reacted, but late, to "Tivoization" (does anyone remember!) and network effects. The most effective control I have heard of is the criteria, that can flag silos (AGPL can't).

Free cloud and services were the killers. All the AGPL'd 4opens code in the world can't obviate the non-volunteer-time expenses of having to run a non-siloed service (self-hosting isn't mainstream).

> "In a different shard of the multiverse SaaS means #Smalltalk as a Service. And it’s awesome. Instant deployment of code to all client images. Replaces what we call the database, the internet and the browser."

I think the Elixer language and CouchDB combined is the closest thing we have to that dream, except it's type system is not a form of Pi-calculus. That it hasn't taken over the world.

Since Spritely Goblins provides some of the concurrency features built-in to Erlang, I think if you could create a typed Pi-calculus macro system for Scheme that translated to Scheme with Goblins processes as primitives, that might be another way of achieving the dream.

But going deeper, I think there's also a need for code forges to provide separate channels for different kinds of feedback on a Free Code project. That way, devs can set different levels of priority for notifications from each one. Eg;

* a forum for feature requests and helpdesk

* an issue tracker for general bugs

* a critical bug reporting channel, with limited access to people trusted to know urgent from non-urgent, who can escalate bugs from the general tracker for special attention

@rodhilton If they thought that a bunch of people who explicitly chose to participate in a more convoluted social network in order to get away from big tech companies would welcome the arrival to that network of a big tech company, they may not be “fucking idiots” but they certainly had a deeply unrealistic picture of how the rest of the world views their work.

@rodhilton Maybe that's possible, but honestly I can't get too worked up about it. It's like feeling miffed that some employees of a tobacco company invented a new type of cigarette that's less deadly only to have doors slammed in their faces with an big FU when reaching out to proponents of clean living.

Anyone working at Meta operates under a compromised ethical framework. Sorrynotsorry.

(For the record, I'm not in the day 1 defed camp. But I also have virtually zero trust in anything Meta.)

@tetrislife @k9ox there was a bunch of experiments about five years ago on federating #TiddlyWiki, and we built the necessary primitives but it never really got traction. See the thread at groups.google.com/g/tiddlywiki for an overview of the early work. The approach we used was even simpler than ActivityPub because it didn't require a programmable server, just static file hosting. (1/2)

@BogDrakonov @phil what is cryptodon's policy in general?

Most instances have policies on what kind they wouldn't federate with. Meta's instance likely would run afoul of those policies anyway. Yet, there is a special discussion. And some of those instances are making an exception for Meta?

More than "fedi might splinter", it looks like Meta has identified some splinters already! Transitive defederation might ensure less splintering.

@quokka Thank you very much for reaching that conclusion! I agree wholeheartedly. #Meta has nefarious intentions in the #fediverse. We must make them go back to their corporate realm, tail between their legs.

Hi @Jermolene

Given the wiki-ness of , is it a stretch to think of a of Tiddlywikis? Taking the liberty of CC'ing @k9ox 😀

@collin I think they might have considered it a failure if it is true that users didn't get into modifying the software they were running. Devs not getting it might not have bothered them as much.

@rahoulb well, you tried 👍🏼

Taking the liberty of including @drgeo , who was bringing his software to (tried , switched to ). i.e. knows a thing or two about developing in Smalltalk.

Regarding the position of scicomm.xyz on #Meta and in the Fediverse, #FediPact etc.

After discussion between myself and the other mods and considering the views expressed by the people on our instance we have decided that pre-emptive blocking of Meta is warranted.

There is more detail on the background and explanation of this decision in a post on our companion site, here:
about.scicomm.xyz/doku.php?id=

Thanks to our people for their comments and suggestions to help us reach this decision.

@fuchsiii @kkarhan @james @nextcloud tiddlywiki has support to save itself to the "server" via WebDAV, Github, Gitlab, Dropbox, Nextcloud. It is shocking how obsoletes multiple apps (like , and bookmark managers), but also saves to server.

@collin similar intent here, but I felt it is not meant for developers but to let users be developers. environments might be more like than code.

@strypey
> separate forum for fediverse funding
Apologies if you intended it to be a "public DM".

Might the explicit use of the word funding put off people? If money is incidental in practice, maybe an existing or new forum for community which organically discusses funding?
