Hello! #introduction

My name's Alex, I wasn't on the birdsite but I'm excited about the idea of a decentralized/federated social network so I thought I'd join

I've got some experience in software engineering and site reliability, but mostly I learned that I don't know anything at all :)

I'm interested in a broad range of topics, more often that not that means stalking these hashtags #emacs #nixos #guix #haskell #erlang #scheme

@strypey i am not dodging any point, just mentioned Nomad et al. Elsewhere, I have seen the sentiment expressed that Mike shouldn't be seen as a software architect like gargron, but as a protocol developer. There should be alternate implementations atleast talking Nomad if not replicating the Hubzilla or Zap or Streams feature-set. Somehow it doesn't seem right to expect that too from Mike et al.

@matl @cringe not sure how broad your definition of fediverse is, but epicyon.net is built on the current fediverse standard (ActivityPub) and meant for a small number of users.

@strypey he has named the protocol: Zot6, Zot8, Nomad. Maybe he wants that to be the focus. E-mail, not GMail? Really, another implementation is what is missing.

@phf @kensanata @gcluley once it gets on another device in unencrypted or decrypted form, there is no guarantee (hope?) that it can be deleted. / / make it clear (in their docs) - it is how a server-device-in-the-middle works.

Better not make it available to a 3rd party in the 1st place. Use (barebones) or Secure Scuttlebutt ( )?

Hilarious. Those that don't know history are doomed to repeat it.

Two way RSS... Hmm so kind of like ActivityStreams 1 (activities for RSS) and Salmon or PUbSubHubub delivery. We called this OStatus  back in the day. In fact there was quite a large network supporting two-way RSS.

"There should be a new address for a user. Here's an idea -- let DNS do it."

Tying an identity to a specific machine. Yeah, we've done that also. In fact ActivityPub still does it today. The only problem is that those machines sometimes fail and when they do,  you no longer exist. Brilliant.

@strypey the part about not moving beyond prototying languages, I wish it was a slam-dunk, but
a) it may only be true nowadays, with Elixir around
b) it asks for working code to be thrown away, which may be insane to do before a re-implementation is around
It can be expected from the community, maybe not from Mike.
@dd

@strypey it doesn't seem extreme at all, given his antipathy to branding. The no-license bit is intriguing; for one, no corporate legal team would accept it!

The official Mastodon app was missing too many features compared to the web UI, but Tusky seems great so far.

@strypey I use Hubzilla and am undemanding of UI's, but I am not sure that Swiss Army knife Hubzilla can be made to look like a Mastodon penknife. Maybe a UI for such a multi-faceted software artifact is difficult?
@dd

@ariadne if you are uncomfortable with eccentricities, I guess you have avoided 'gcc' and 'emacs' and Linux and git in the past decades? Some free/open-source software developers are like movie stars in the visibility they get; alas, they don't waste time not being themselves </sarcasm>. @strypey

#fediverse meta

@strypey @tetrislife @mike @TiberiusReigns @jupiter_rowland Or, you know, maybe even just a blog or two talking about why this cool project is so very cool, because of all the cool things you can do with it that you can't do with those other more popular but far less cool projects.

But no, it's just lotsa landing pages with one-sixth of the screen taken up with a stylized icon and the words "Social Media", as if that says anything about what sets this project apart from others.

@bloodaxe if you take the long view (like Keynes), yes! Short-term, getting things to fall line is an incessant ask.

@bloodaxe my username is my personal view of life - it is like tetris 😀

mastodon/stallman copypasta, complete edition

@retr0id hilarious!

@pre @rysiek @aral

Ipfs is probably the possible approach: each message is addressed by its sha256 hash, and there's metadata on top of them, which is also stored as ipfs messages.

@rysiek @aral
I agree we should have small instances, but that exasperates the problem if having to send a job for every server following you. Would mean sending more jobs to more small instances instead of one job to a big one.

Some way to bit-torrent the data around the network may be important if we star to get people with hundreds of thousands of followers.

@bloodaxe cool. I was regurgitating, I don't game at all actually! I am interested in performant software, and game-adjacent tech is very relevant to that.

@arpunk million $ question. Will they stick with it? Not many coming from default vim-in-the-shell setups even grasp the possibilities of . Well-set-up vim+cscope is a breeze to work with, actually.
