One of my frequent problems is broken USB ports with keyboard PCBs like the GH60, Pro Micro clones and various ESP8266/ESP32 boards. The micro USB ports on these boards are SMD ones and don’t have through hole support pins. Hence, they are very prone to the USB coming off if a cable is inserted incorrectly.
Here is a picture of my daily use GH60 keyboard. It does not expose its USB pins distinctly on the board. And so one has to trace the tracks and solder wires.
This time, I added a generous amount of hot glue so that the wires don’t come off if they’re stretched. Hope this attempt at salvaging the board last longer than the earlier 2 attempts.
@davidbisset @davew The open source community is inherently challenged when trying to create "one-click for non-corps/non-techies" software because doing so usually requires designers and PMs on long-term paid contracts.
You'd think a startup could have seen and filled this hole, but startups (1) usually only ambulance-chase ideas someone else already proved viable (2) I cynically suspect wouldn't like any version of open-source that allows customers to become *actually* independent of them.
@emilybell @davew The independent Bylines network have created their own server & links to all their accounts are here
https://bylines.social/@BylinesNetwork
Mastodon which is incredibly hot, supports RSS beautifully.
Just add .rss to any account to get the feed. Amazing!
https://mastodon.social/@davew.rss
Open that in your favorite feed reader. It’ll work.
Post a screenshot, say what the reader app is.
And pass this on to everyone who uses a feed reader.
Spread the word!
This is a huge deal for the open web.
why aren't lighter-weight servers like Pleroma/Akkoma/whatever an option? why is Mastodon-identical behaviour assumed to be inviolable?
Vapourware, but why shouldn't storage be de-duplicated across pairs of servers? Sure, disable it if you want copies. But jointly provision IPFS pinning and exchange hashes in S2S communication.
other extrapolations from "outside"
why are accounts with 500k followers of interest, if Twitter isn't to be recreated? RSS is a legitimate option, servers serving RSS and AP are too, clients supporting RS and AP are too.
why not ads, if that is what users are going to "pay"? would typical admins refuse to federate with any instances that, say, implicitly, mandatorily, subscribe all their accounts to an ad bot?
@profcarroll so, he/it will allow paid Mastodon promotion?
@jgoerzen I agree with everything you say here ... but I use M-x shell by default, not eshell. Why? I don't know, it's just not ... comfortable. I've tried a few times to make it more comfortable through configuration, but I keep running up against two problems:
1. I write a LOT of bourne on the command line, and it's not bourne-enough
2. The documentation is, to be polite, "lacking"
Combine that with having to choose a priori whether a command is lisp or shell, and ... it's tough.
@coderCyclist why do new users need to be babied?
IMHO, being a new user is an opportune time for someone to understand that they technically have a choice of servers. Appreciating such a choice and the anti-FOMO tendencies organic in the federated timeline are what would give them value out of it. Otherwise, they might as well go to alternative silos.
Current moderation needn't remain as-is, new users could perspective.
@mathiasx ah, got it. I assumed jamming meant making music.
@mathiasx is this different from Sonic Pi? I don't do music myself, but curious.
@samtoland For mobile, I've been using the calendar and contact apps from https://www.simplemobiletools.com/
as alternatives to google calendar. My contacts and calendar are now on nextcloud. You need another app https://www.davx5.com/ to get it all to sync. You pay for it in the Google play store but it's free on Fdroid. I've been using K-9 mail on Android too for nextcloud hosted email.
I can't help but do comparison to programming when I do either plumbing or electric projects.
I've been crawling behind the walls to route some cables, and the only way I can explain to myself the work of the previous owner is by thinking that they used globals for everything, and didn't write a single comment.
@timbray @jamie I didn’t ever tweet with any sense that I was doing something to be archived. I see it as ephemeral.
I’ve downloaded an archive and completely purged my account. I just don’t feel like leaving my content, including photography, on that dumpster fire of a website. I’m completely fine with being gone and not leaving much of a trace!
@timbray I agree with A but (for me) not with B. I have long delete all of my twits and likes after N months for the same reason that I close comments on my blog posts after N months: nothing good can come of those late replies: no community, only bots and monetization.
Anything of substance (you know, the *quality* fart jokes) are on my blog. I'm not one of those "buckle up" goofballs. I know HTML and several other languages.
