We seem easily nudged into saying (and thinking?) that we *need* something when we may actually only *want* it, if at all. Scientists (and commentators) seem good at finding or inventing terms; have they a term for this phenomenon? They are the ones doing the nudging on behalf of corporations most of the time!

Good illustration of the bias in the data ^^

This is assuming every clock has a unique time.

If they don’t? You’re going to need a *lot* more clocks.

This is still about AI.

A broken clock is right twice a day.

Therefore, obtain 43,200 broken clocks and one of them will always be right.

This is actually about AI.

I tend towards option 2. All the most inadequate infrastructure, either in core systems, or public accessibility, of both, is in areas that have been partially or completely commercialized. The intercity train, bus, and ferry network is a classic example, as is the total failure of drainage, telecomms and power networks in the areas affected by Gabrielle. It's clear to me we need some kind of non-commercial *and* non-partisan systems for long term infrastructure planning.

I'm really proud of my parents for growing this 'meadow' where once there was the most sad patch lawn. I explained the benefits of not mowing your lawn to my dad last year, and he really got into it. In the 2 years they have been in their house they have transformed the most boring patch of lawn into this meadow, lots of fruit trees, and multiple veggie beds.

@hrefna we're actually seeing this right now with #mastodon being the big fish that mostly ignores all compatibility requests coming from smaller projects.

@odddev Short answer: "if I want to work with two or more AP-based systems I should have sublinear scaling to ensure that we can all work together; I should not need to install a copy of every platform I want to talk to in order to make sure we can all work together."

At the moment #ActivityPub is not really a protocol so much as a protocol family and that protocol family can't actually talk to each other without a lot of ad-hoc work and a lot of things that aren't in the spec.

@atomicpoet
FB/Meta might be targeting just the accounts, not the fewer IRC/XMPP/Matrix minded accounts. They can be another client that speaks an dialect, just like Mastodon or Pleroma, but can give the migrants what they don't get as much on the Fediverse - say, discoverability (and ChatGPT-ness ?) - and add in their algorithms.

@Gargron

@Gargron it won’t be ActivityPub-powered. It might speak ActivityPub — which is very different. Because it will speak it a little bit. With strange incompatibilities and glitches. And weird extensions. Sending you on wild bug chases and distracting you. Exporting only the boring stuff (e.g. to see videos you have to be logged into their app.) While they build features you can’t easily match because they have 100 people on the team.

@atomicpoet @Gargron That’s juste the first step in Embrace, Extend, Extinguish…

@atomicpoet @Gargron can they bully their way into future work on standards, like Google? I mean, web compliance is basically chromium, at this point.

I, a privacy advocate who doesn't allow anything Google near my house.

My parents, who have a Google Assistant in every room and 12 Nest cameras around the perimeter.

I literally feel like I'm entering enemy territory when I go over there.

One upside of giving-up #golang is that I can close a shitload of browser tabs…

@ceresbzns >FOSS

IRC servers run at like 10MB ram usage and barely any other usage

it can handle thousands of concurrent users (the only kind of users) with ease

yep, check out https://sr.ht/~emersion/gamja/

yep

modern IRC servers are probably pretty secure check out Ergo.

@ceresbzns FOSDEM used Matrix for their conference in 2021 (and later). They had around 30k attendees, but of course that required a bit of an advanced setup. You probably don't need that for 50 users. matrix.org/blog/2021/02/15/how

Stop thinking of Twitter, TikTok, IG, (et al) as social media sites.

They are **Content Refineries.**

Like processed food manufacturers they take user content & extract the most addicting/engaging content. Brains eat it up but in an unhealthy “devour the whole bag of chips” way.

They make hyper-processed social media junk food.

Mastodon is more like a potluck. We're all bringing dishes. It's a mess. Kids are running all over. But we are, at least, real people sharing real things.

What are we selling?: Fast relief for explosive diarrhea.
How should we package it?: With the most difficult-to-open blister pack known to mankind!
