@davoloid Eventually we'll update to get translation and edit features on this server. ETA unknown, but it's in the planning.

@hbw Following is following as usual, the way you know.

Subscribing allows you to follow a user without letting them know you're following them and without them needing to approve you if their account is locked down.
The downside is that you'll only be able to see their public posts. Kinda as if you subscribed to their RSS feed.

@seedyh We had our change a week ago. Meh, I was happy with it because it got so dark that my natural sleep schedule started to drift forward by one hour... now it's somewhat correct again. ;)

@davoloid @vielbein Yeah, I had an university email.

As soon as I was not a student anymore I lost it.

Just move on. Have some backup account somewhere, host your own, et cetera.

@vielbein Ask around with the Mastodon hashtag. That's not my expertise.

@hvangalen Confusing perspective, tot ik zag dat het behoorlijk gespiegeld is. ;)

@kefir It happens, nothing new. I've had my time on a dying instance too (hardware failure, nothing was recovered) and simply moved on. For most people it's just social media, you shouldn't base your life on it.

For organizations, companies, etc, they're best off hosting their own server instead with their own domain, and where only their employees can have an account.

@vielbein Yes. Though some other instances might cache the posts from that instance, but that's not a guarantee.

I was on mastodon.host until it broke down. Everything's gone and I simply continued on Qoto.org.

If you want to have everything in control, you can start your own instance and manage your own posts and create your own backups.

In fact, it'd be great if organizations would host their own instances and have their employees on there (and be automatically verified because only employees can belong to that instance's domain).

That way the organization would ensure that they will never go down and never let the information get lost.

That's the power of federation.

@louiscouture More fun when you were looking around for, say, a new dishwasher.

How many dishwashers does one need in a house, Google?!

@PawelK Agreed. It'd be nice for a car-less city square. Though I'd -rather- not have that in my town...

@garyackerman
No! You don't say so!

*cough*

Welcome to Qoto and the Fediverse. ;)

@totheralistair I have long ago stopped bothering with the oven clock. One simple power outage and bam, I can start all over again and need to study some arcane science just to be able to change the time on that blasted thing!

@nickopotamus Yeah, I don't know any better than living like this. I own 4 bikes (nothing exciting, normal bikes and one folding bike) and no bike helmet. ;)

@nickopotamus
Anti-helmet activists?

...

Heh.

Okay, you're clearly not from the Netherlands. Helmets here are for the elderly, kids, racing, very fast ebikers, and tourists. ;)

@PawelK Looks cool, but somehow I don't think it's great to have such a distraction at a busy road.

@dichotomiker Okay, just one internet provider, right?

I'd move providers. So? Although he'd still have to adhere to EU rules here, not much he can do about it.

@jack1142 The version number is actually misleading as we run a modified Mastodon instance and seperately import the new features from the official branch.

There'll be some updates incoming. I'll ask @freemo if he can at least modify that number to sometihng completely different so people won't get confused. ;)
