> _“I have in no point in this pandemic had a strong opinion about #covid or public health measures. **I have just had a strong opinion that it makes no sense for unqualified people to have strong opinions on these matters**, and that it's dangerous when you have millions and millions of people deciding that their intuitions about a brand new patogen and the first significant #pandemic in anyone's lifetime should supersede the product of rational, scientific investigation by those who are most qualified to perform it.”_

I like blockchains, and I love #SamHarris. But this #NFT nonsense is clouding even Sam's thinking. Case in point:
> _“What we're proposing to do at #WakingUp is to create our version of the [Giving What We Can] Pledge. We might add some other relevant wrinkle to it, but basically it would be the same pledge. We want to create #NFTs based on the ‘daily heads’ that have become this ever present piece of artwork within the app, and give them out to perhaps 10,000 people who have taken that pledge. Consider what this will make possible. […] **It's the kind of idea that this technology has suddenly made possible. Everything I just said would make no sense without the #blockchain and NFTs.**”_
Er… _what?_
Your use case is: “I want to publicize that these people have signed this oath, or donated this much money — and create a cute avatar for each one of them”. You are the CA (Certificate Authority), you have a URL, and you can create and assign as many personalised images as you want.
#GivingWatWeCan is already doing that (minus the JPEGs), the Waking Up Foundation can do that, and anyone can do that with early-90's web tech.
How are a distributed public ledger, a consensus mechanism, and a mining algorithm essential, or even useful, here?

After [my first three _weeknotes_](https://blog.tripu.info/tags/weeknotes/), I think I can ✔️ this project.

Very interested in your thoughts.
I just read, over the course of several days, #SlateStarCodex's [“Non-Libertarian FAQ”](https://slatestarcodex.com/2017/02/22/repost-the-non-libertarian-faq/) (years ago I had only skimmed it).
It is a brilliant text, as usual, and it reminded me why although I read and flirt at times with different ideologies I remain mostly a #moderate — why I don't call myself a #libertarian or an #anarchocapitalist; but rather someone with libertarian sympathies, or perhaps a (classic) #liberal.
It reminded me why absolute #libertarianism or #anarchism as ideologies and moral systems, in particular, may feel rational, coherent, complete and desirable… without being any of those things.
Which does _not_ imply, of course, that some specific governments nowadays would not do better by moving closer to the libertarian pole!
I'm getting really tired of the bogus argument _“if we dispense with #religion, worse forms of dogmatism arise to fill the void”_.
No.
First, a technicality: some of the secular forms of fanaticism that _did_ replace #Christianity in History _were themselves religions_. #ChristopherHitchens, #SamHarris and others have in insisted in the religious nature of #Nazism (and my reading of #MeinKampf is confirming that); #Communism from #Mao to #PolPot showed all the signs of a faith-based ideology; #JohnMcWhorter [has mapped all the tenets of a religion onto wokeism](https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/26/books/review/john-mcwhorter-woke-racism.html); etc. So in a sense, #JordanPeterson and others are right when they say that often religion gets replaced with worse stuff… but then they should explain what “worse stuff” they fear could replace the religion that we call, eg, #wokeism!
And even then, this argument is tossed around with no supporting evidence: where's the careful study of enough historical situations to prove that _always_ (or even _often_) when some form of #monotheism lost ground quickly, nihilistic or destructive atheism took its place?
If one removes broken tiles from the floor, of course there's the risk that those holes will get filled with mud or dirt. But it does not _have_ to be that way. One is also free to decide to level the floor with new tiles or with other material — or even to board up that entire corner of the house, and never step on it again.

I am always moved by anyone who bothers to follow me anywhere, and grateful for the attention of you all (yes, the _three_ of you 😜).
That being said: man… **#RSS!**
Cross-posting; pushing stuff from one place to another; sharing pics on platforms intended for commentary, or long posts on sites mainly used for video… that's always kind of redundant, noisy and awkward — compared to the simplicity and efficiency of #feeds; ie, of automatically receiving everything new.
Don't you subscribe to feeds?
You youngsters are irredeemable… 😜
@torgo I indulge in https://www.reddit.com/r/CityPorn/ , that's my escape mechanism :)

That in turn reminds me of “philosophical zombies”, eg https://80000hours.org/podcast/episodes/david-chalmers-nature-ethics-consciousness/
That's a good answer. I should have qualified my question (“…short of modifying the source code of humans itself?”).
Reminds me of #DavidPearce's “Hedonistic Imperative”.
