@marilink

In the public sector we're often told to follow what the private sector do, that they are the model to follow. In reality, we do some things better in the public sector: accessibility, user research that is not led by profit, working in the open, avoiding deceptive patterns, going slow and not breaking things. The web itself came from the public sector, we can all learn from each other.

@trinsec @olives @ceoln @freemo Oops. I have never looked at the Mastodon codebase, but sounds like something we should fix? I might give it a go, but prefer others more versed to do it.

If you say “I will not change my climate behavior until <Rich Person> stops flying in a private jet”, someone will point at your behavior which releases more carbon than they and say “until they change, I won’t change”. And there will be someone pointing at them who has an even lower impact.

Yes, privat jets must be banned. But everyone must change their behavior. Who releases more, must do more. But this is on everyone.

Because, if everyone is willing to change, we can ground those m-fers.

HP are such scammers

I posted about this very cheap printer before, which strongly suggests that there is No USB, only Wifi. When I first got it I figured out how to print over the network without using the app they try to bully you into downloading.

It turns out it's even easier to print, just use the USB port they try to pretend isn't there!

No company is going to rewrite their firmware to remove the USB stack. It's even more expensive to redesign the hardware to get rid of the USB port physically. They opted for the cheapest option, a little sticker.

They are just trying to store everyone's documents in their stupid cloud service that some teenage extortion group is going to break into and leak one day. Don't give them your data.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation will award Alexandra Elbakyan, founder of the 'pirate' library Sci-Hub, for her efforts to provide access to scientific knowledge.

Without Sci-Hub, many academics would be unable to complete their research projects.

#EFF also highlights that Elbakyan’s work helps to challenge the current academic publishing system, where researchers are used as unpaid workhorses.

#Russia #Anonymity #VPN #Censorship: "President Putin has signed off on legal amendments that threaten to destroy online anonymity, crush free speech, and stifle innovation. Starting this year, internet platforms must verify new users' identities via state-approved systems, before granting access. VPN circumvention advice will constitute a crime, certain Gmail use will be banned, and non-state-approved hosting companies will be rendered illegal."

So, tell me:

Is a victim of , effectively unbanked by “the system”, a warning sign for all aspiring contrarians?

Or is he capitalising on the reasonable refusal of a single bank (or even a whole category of exclusive banks) and exaggerating to advance his agenda?

(Note that the answer is orthogonal to the questions of whether he's a despicable human being [which he probably is] or whether was a good idea [it probably wasn't])
