Just imagine you were used since childhood to eating (puppies of) farmed dogs, cats, dolphins and monkeys. Animals crammed into dark little places, maimed and overfed for the minimum number of days necessary for their meat to be economically viable. Imagine that everyone around you had done so for as long as you can remember. And imagine people kept cute shrimp, hens, goats and sheep as pets, giving them names, taking them to the vet, buying food and toys for them, etc.

Can you see the issue now? Are you willing to break out of that cognitive dissonance?

My intuition is that for the vast majority of us the answer is: zero 😞

That's true for me, at least. (The last time I used a plane was almost five years ago, but in my case it's just because I had no business trips or holidays overseas while my kids were very little.)

Air #travel is one of the things I find most difficult to say no to for environmental reasons 😢

Sometimes I realise that people I know — _things_ happen to them. Things happen to people. To me, rarely anything happens. And I feel bad or weird.

Then I reflect on the kinds of things that happen to other people, and most often it's that they inadvertently flushed their expensive engagement ring down the toilet, got into a brawl at a bar and so later had to face trail, realised they had a pair of dirty briefs sticking out at the end of their trouser leg in the middle of a very important meeting with clients, didn't pay a very expensive medical bill in a certain US state thus banning themselves from ever setting foot on that state again for life, very narrowly escaped death from asphyxiation due to a malfunctioning boiler, forgot to engage the parking brake on a slope and found their car a few metres down the road, resumed their road trip after having stopped at a gas station and realised they had been going for an hour with one family member less (all real anecdotes from friends, acquaintances and relatives)…

…and then I think it's probably OK that things don't happen to me. Perhaps I'm better that way, after all 😃

What is the next online service or community that you love and have been using intensively for a good while, that will be unceremoniously acquired, discontinued, maimed, or shut down, causing you to lose a good deal of value and pleasure, even if you manage to export data to some useless format?

Six policy wonks with very strong views, six opinionated journalists rallying from their respective platforms against the #US “arming #Ukraine and fuelling a neocon proxy #war”.

The host, #ThaddeusRussell, asks the most relevant question: _“It's **absolutely essential** that we clarify our position here, otherwise we are sitting ducks for what they say about us. **Otherwise, it becomes true that we are #Putin stooges**. […] This is essential, I need to know from you guys, as fan of yours: **where do you actually stand on this?**”_

Genius 1: _“I favour the cessation or mitigation of warfare rather than the perpetuation of it”_.

Host: _“OK. So does that mean a negotiated settlement, giving #Russia Donbas and Crimea, and nothing else?”_

Genius 1: _“I only really have a principle which is to cease the warfare rather than perpetuate it”_.

Genius 2: _“I think there should be negotiations. I'm not a diplomat, so I don't see a point in me putting a solution on the table.”_

Genius 3: _“As much as I weep for the the predicament of the people in Ukraine, ultimately my greater concern is for all of humanity and for World War III”_.

…And that's why I can't take seriously most of the naive anti-war rhetoric :P
