In areas that interest me but where I am mostly ignorant (so many!), usually my main goal is to have the “big picture”. ie, I won't read a book on Austrian economics or a book on Kantianism — I'd rather read a comprehensive overview of the different fields within the area, the key concepts and authors, the timeline of events, and the different schools of thought involved. I prefer to do that first before I zoom in on anything in particular.

Be a grown-up and read about difficult subjects, stories with nuance, ambiguity, shades of grey. It's _fiction_, after all. You may learn a thing or two.
