Here's the kicker. It's not that Galactica picked the wrong law. It is that the Padua economist to whom Galactica attributes the law, Gianni Brandolini, DOES NOT EXIST.

Galactica's phrasing of the law itself? That does not exist either. No one has ever said that phrase online (rather a surprise, tbh).

Galactica doesn't let us "access and manipulate what we know about the universe." It generates *pure bullshit* — which, incidentally, will be orders of magnitude more difficult to clean up.

@dto crazy how many of the people here have been using #Emacs longer than I've been alive...

How does it feel to watch the rise and fall of so many technologies? Especially as someone already invested in the "right" one?

From the introduction of the paper “Here Come the ‘Computer People’: Anthropomorphosis, Command, and Control in Early Personal Computing” by @starkcontrast.

Considering ”tech” execs today, I can’t help but think ”plus ça change…”

Babbage Patch Finds # 11 Cold War Computing

In 1957, at a #Washington DC trade show, Burroughs' message:

"COMPUTATION: THE HEART OF THE WEAPON"

Sadly, true & it played on Cold War fears in the year of #Sputnik

Computing key to nuclear weapons & command/control. It spawned some (rare) anti-nuke activists from CS like ACM co-founder Edmund Berkeley.

Burroughs supplied #USAF ATLAS #missile guidance #computers

Is there a good article on #Mastodon #Fediverse that compares it with similar decentralized communication systems such as #Usenet, BBS, mailing lists, telegram groups etc. including history and specific properties, benefits and limits of each system? I've only seen superficial references so far.

An anonymous donor sent me the "spritzer" feed of Twitter for October 2021-November 2022. (It's a much smaller sample than "sprinkler" or "firehose" but it's still many tweets.)

I shouldn't really be surprised that the people who pronounce the English word “engine” as /ɛnʒain/ also pronounce “sysop” as /saisɔp/ :-)

From what I have seen, the texts produced by galactica.org tend to start off strong, but then quickly become repetitive. Of course, circular definitions are great for internal coherence…

And as it says in the fine print: “Language Models are prone to hallucinate text.”

Gotta love these US scholars who discover that there are other languages besides English and who then feel the urgent need to ‘educate’ everybody about this because they assume everybody’s like them.

Very happy with the list of accepted papers for #CHR2022! This is the third edition already. It is really starting to become a tradition!

PDFs will follows soon. Check out the programme here:

Do preprints need to change when they're published in a journal?

I answered that in my latest piece & discussed some of the evidence around how limited changes can be.

I'm working on a much longer piece on the data around peer review for next year too 🙂

If you’re a fan of early internet history (ARPANET, BBS, Homebrew Computer Club) then I’d highly recommend this interview with Kevin Driscoll.

Listening to it, I realized how narrow my understanding of this history was. Local pre-packet-switched BBS, actual physical bulletin boards, other early networks-of-networks. All outside academia and run by hobbyists and moderated by volunteers. Lots of parallels with the Fediverse.

(art. 216 OETV)

Last Thursday, my colleagues and I were invited to talk about AI and games. Johan Cuda (left) and I (right) presented Pac-Man ghosts' "personnalities", while Isaac Pante (center) made the best demonstration of the game.

That happened at the Museum of the Hand in Lausanne. Scientific mediation is so rewarding. There were friends, students, and a lot of strangers, and a lot of great discussions.

Thank you @r2gf for the picture and being in the audience!
