Our #mastodon4j fork get's some traction. We've started to create some issues, defined a milestone 2.0.0 release, and continue to define what needs to go into our first library release. If you guys have any input or are willing to contribute, then checkout this #GitHub repo here:

I find this letter from John Carmack interesting in that it summarizes a sentiment I've heard from literally all of the highest impact/most effective people I've talked to at large companies:

You can make a big difference, but you're constantly fighting against a self-sabotaging organization.

I know some fairly high impact people who aren't bothered by this kind of thing; those people tend to say things like "I try not to care too much" or "I used to get too frustrated, so now I [do less].

Today on @Wired I argue that we, by which I mean narrowly the media, but more broadly everybody, have fallen into the same trap with Elon Musk as we did with Donald Trump. We've played into their strategy of making the story about them, which means that media coverage serves to feed the pro- and anti- camps and obscure what's actually going on instead of illuminating—a, simple, stupid hack that turns us into the opposite of what we're supposed to be.

Folks, if you are in the #TwitterMigration process, check out movetodon.org/

It is an awesome and extremely easy-to-use tool to find folks from your Twitter network on M@stodon and follow them. I just followed 200+ folks 😂😂😂

Huge shoutout to @Tibor

my favourite blogging trick is to write the headings so that they tell the story on their own. What's the most important idea? Put in the heading!

I don't see a lot of other people doing this, but IMO it makes blog posts a LOT easier to skim if the reader is busy

Throughout my career, I have believed that it is essential to dig into mysterious pathological systems behavior even if it seems somewhat tangential, for it can often reveal problems deep in the system that can have much more damaging presentation.

For a vivid example of pathological behavior, a deep underlying problem, and (especially) the methodology to connect one to the other, read this extraordinary analysis from @oxidecomputer engineer Dave Pacheco:

It looks like Apple is finally going to allow third-party app stores, which is a pretty big win. Why are they doing it? Upcoming EU requirements that will hit in 2024.

I spent an afternoon testing this JNA-based (Java Native Access) webcam capture driver. I got video preview and QR-code capture working in #JavaFX on macOS 13/Apple Silicon. This is pre-release, but looks very promising!

@mgeist The headline reads like hyperbole considering the body of the article says: "The CRTC does not directly regulate the prices for most telecom services in Canada, so Telus’s application only applied to a small subset of customers. "

Doesn't sound like this is going to make much difference to most people unfortunately. Unless Telus is somehow dissuaded by the small side dish of sabre-rattling the CRTC served up: "But the regulator issued a warning to the telecom industry that it would take action if the practice of imposing a credit card surcharge to customer bills persists. "

Guess we'll see. Not going to hold my breath though!

You know what they apparently say now: a pound of the cure is worth not having to endure an ounce of the prevention.

@ct_bergstrom Maybe we need to start setting exams where we tell students to use the cheat-bots and paste in the answers, but then the actual exam is to GRADE THE BOT’S ANSWERS and explain which answers are wrong and why 🤣

A lot of "I don't want to talk about politics" is wanting to avoid the conversations about who gets to be respected and who must volunteer as a sacrifice. Who gets the benefit of the doubt. Who gets second chances. Who gets the presumption of innocence and leniency based on circumstance and their "promising future". Who gets to fear for their life and act out in violence to protect it.

These are the places where people's existence is "politics" in ways they don't get to opt out of.
