@dschier Ansible galaxy dependencies still feel poorly integrated given that a seperate command needs to be used to download them instead of Ansible automatically downloading them if required when running a play.

Professor @cmrherder does not hold back as he resigns from Patented Medicines Prices Review Board:

Government: "If you link to a news article, you owe that outlet money."

Big tech: "Well that doesn't really make any sense. We're sending them readership!"

Government: "Nah you'll owe them money for the links."

Big tech: "Okay, we'll stop linking."

Government: "Outrageous!"

TIL that macOS ships with a default CLI command called "sips", for "scriptable image processing system" - and it can convert webp images to PNG, but it can also generate entirely new images from scratch using an almost entirely undocumented canvas-based JavaScript API! til.simonwillison.net/macos/si

I don’t know understand the attraction of being able to talk to computers using breezy casual conversational language; I’ve been telling these little digital bastards what to do for decades using extremely precise formalised language and they still get it wrong

@seldo @anildash I really wish phones had a robust notion of deprecating contacts (or part of a contact’s info, like previous addresses) — don’t forget them entirely, but don’t offer them up as suggestions &c

A Google Fi user got hit by a sim swap attack that resulted in his Authy account getting hacked. Since the hacker had control of the user's phone number, the hacker was able to add a new device to the Authy account and from there take control of the user's Coinbase and Outlook accounts.

One way to prevent this from happening to you is to make sure you (1) enroll at least one other device in your Authy account and then (2) have your Authy account set to disable multi device (as shown in the image below).

Doing task 1 will ensure that you always have at least 2 devices enrolled (in case you lose 1 of them). Task 2 will ensure that someone who gains control of your phone number won't be able to enroll new devices.

Solid reporting by @lorenzofb, btw.

Today in "just look at the data", someone thought Jaren Jackson Jr.'s steal and block numbers seemed suspicious, looked more closely, and found numbers that aren't even remotely plausible: reddit.com/r/nba/comments/10nb

It's amazing how often, when you just look at data, you find really heinous stuff that immediately jumps out at you.

The flip side of this is that most teams & orgs at most large companies assign work in a way that makes it structurally hard to find obvious stuff like this.

The open source ecosystem won't begin to understand the impact of the #GoogleLayoffs for a little while yet, but we really need to pay attention. They wrote a lot of checks, and did a lot of work behind the scenes, and some of the people instrumental in that work are now gone.

Google's membership and foundations renewals next year will be revealing.

A think that just clicked for me is that a lot of folks on here engaging in Discourse about search, federation rules, QTs etc are conflating abuse-resistant design with security by obscurity as if they are the same thing. Which they are not, and conflating the two makes conversations about them impossible.

Shout out to @0xabad1dea for this post and subthread which helped me articulate this infosec.exchange/@0xabad1dea/1

I started working on a new #Java library to load and save #LottieFiles and #dotLottie, plus a #JavaFX player.

The very early steps are taken. A website on lottie4j.com thanks to #JBang, Mastodon account on @lottie4j, different Lottie JSON files can already be loaded and saved back to the same JSON, and a very first visual output showing there is some valid data being handled.

Sources: github.com/lottie4j

The JavaFX player component will be a very big challenge...

what are some examples of places you've used bitwise operations (and, or, xor) in practice? as specific as possible would be great.

so far I have

* or: setting bit flags, eg when opening a file (O_RDWR | O_NONBLOCK)
* and: using a bit mask to extract 4 bits from a tcp header
* xor: ???
