A think that just clicked for me is that a lot of folks on here engaging in Discourse about search, federation rules, QTs etc are conflating abuse-resistant design with security by obscurity as if they are the same thing. Which they are not, and conflating the two makes conversations about them impossible.

Shout out to @0xabad1dea for this post and subthread which helped me articulate this infosec.exchange/@0xabad1dea/1

I started working on a new #Java library to load and save #LottieFiles and #dotLottie, plus a #JavaFX player.

The very early steps are taken. A website on lottie4j.com thanks to #JBang, Mastodon account on @lottie4j, different Lottie JSON files can already be loaded and saved back to the same JSON, and a very first visual output showing there is some valid data being handled.

Sources: github.com/lottie4j

The JavaFX player component will be a very big challenge...

what are some examples of places you've used bitwise operations (and, or, xor) in practice? as specific as possible would be great.

so far I have

* or: setting bit flags, eg when opening a file (O_RDWR | O_NONBLOCK)
* and: using a bit mask to extract 4 bits from a tcp header
* xor: ???

migrated to a new mastodon instance and it looks like it mostly succeeded (~90% of followers moved over).

The missing 10% is kind of weird though -- it looks like for most instances, either *everyone* moved over or almost *nobody* moved over. For example almost no followers moved over from infosec.exchange, ioc.exchange, data-folks.masto.host, toot.cat, tilde.zone, mastodon.au, norden.social, defcon.social, hostux.social, and mastodon.art

does anyone know why that is, or how to fix it?

And finally, the big Searchtodon Retrospective: searchtodon.social/Adventures-

I erred on the side of including more rather than less and take you through:

- My background and the motivation for creating Searchtodon.
- The initial design and research.
- Recap of *the experiment*, including results and commentary.
- tl;dr: 2 our of 3 hypotheses came back positive.
- Recap of the feedback received (the juicy bits).
- A (somewhat hopeful) look at the way forward.

wrote up a quick "bookshelf" page with a short list of books / websites / courses / exercises that have helped me jvns.ca/bookshelf/.

It's definitely incomplete, but I'd love to see other people's versions!

I have become anecdotally aware of several (smaller) mastodon instances that are considering shutting down because they cannot afford their server bills.

If you are a #mastodonadmin of an instance that is 1000+ users and considering shutting down please reach out to me.

We may be willing to take over your instance and save your users if you are compliant with the Mastodon Server Covenenant (joinmastodon.org/covenant)

We thought that our ability for compassion made us human.

Turns out, it's our ability to select each image containing a fire hydrant.

After I did the story about the dad whose Google account was closed and deleted for taking a photo of his naked toddler for the doctor, I heard from a distraught mother in Colorado who was going through the same thing and didn't know why. Her Google account was disabled, taking with it her wedding photos, videos of her 9yo son growing up, tax documents, email and everything else. And she had no idea why. She was in tears. "It feels like my house burned down," she told me: nytimes.com/2022/12/30/technol

I love closing out the year with this. 😊

On December 31, 1995, exactly 27 years ago today, legendary cartoonist Bill Watterson published his final 'Calvin and Hobbes' comic strip.

How beautiful and appropriate it was, and a timeless reminder of what we have before us in 2023. ❤️

Happy New Year, ya'll!

This is a carbonized loaf of bread from Pompeii, 79 C.E. - preserved for thousands of years in the volcanic ashes of Mount Vesuvius. The baker left his stamp, which reads: “Celer, slave of Quintus Granius Verus." Celer is known to have survived the eruption, as his name later appears on a list of "freed men." Most bread at the time was baked in community ovens, so customized stamps were used to mark individual families’ and bakeries’ loaves.

From an edition of the 'Stay Grounded' newsletter titled "You'll Never Scroll to the End":

"1. We are hard wired to shift our focus to novel information above all else.

2. We live in a world where novel information is readily accessible in near-infinite amounts.

3. Bad actors and opportunists create and spread false or misleading information masquerading as trustworthy.

4. AIs present all (real and unreal) information to us in a very difficult to resist way."

@ezyang @danluu I always loved this idea newyorker.com/magazine/2011/10

An important difference between peer feedback and hiring a coach is that someone hiring a coach presumably wants to improve, whereas a person getting feedback (even from their manager) hasn’t necessarily made that decision.

@techlife If I had to take my guess I suspect that we will start to see branches off the main line of the standard mastodon server software implementing these features. Mine, for example already allow quoting. There will be community backlash and a lot of instances will block instances running non-conforming branches. I suspect that we will end up with a blobby fediverse with one well connected group of instances that took the moderation maximalist course, another well connected group that went down the path of building a Twitter replacement, and a few large servers in the middle that don't have the twitter-like features but don't block other instances who do.

This already kind of happens with servers that have a liberal policy on graphic sexual images. (Pawoo[dot]net is one of these and has been in the news of late because it was bought by a for profit company.) They all federate with each other. Most instances block these on site, some few don't allow adult content but don't stop their users from following people on servers who do.

“Did you know that of $100 spent in a chain store, only $13 stays in the local economy? Of $100 spent at a locally owned store, $48 stays in the local economy.” A reminder of just one of many reasons to #ShopLocal as you do your last-minute #Christmas shopping. Especially when you support your local downtowns and main streets.
