Exactly so. Blocking completely aside, Mastodon does not federate properly, and replies in threads are invisible, for a multitude of reasons to lots of users, in ways that can be very difficult to understand, especially for users. To further the confusion, what can be completely visible in one direction can be totally invisible from the other. This creates a feeling of being ignored, when they in reality are invisible (so they ARE technically being ignored, but not based on ill-will).

The first bug reports for this ("backfilling") were filed 6 years ago. They are still not fixed in Mastodon. Some Fediverse services have fixed this (Pleroma, and thereby its forks like Akkoma for example) by simply doing non-destructive additions to the Mastodon API (which they too are based on). Calckey also has started fixing this problem.

Given those things it, to me, is a complete mystery why/how Mastodon has become the poster child of the Fediverse, especially when most of the competing Fediverse services out there actually has all the things you ask for. I think the answer is "marketing", or even "non-existing marketing".

Pretty please Mastodon maintainers, add the features underprivileged communities need to move on from Twitter:

- Quote posts to add context
- Restrictions on who can reply to a post
- Add a "catch-up" timeline to see popular posts from people you follow
- Better, less technical onboarding & directly integrate e.g. fedifinder as a one-click checkbox without tech jargon "[x] Automatically find who I'm following on Twitter"
- Better support for higher quality media

The 24 hour news cycle, with it's competitive rush-to-be-first incentives, will never connect harmlessly with masses who'll take anything and use it to reinforce whatever they already believe, declaring it as justification to double down on their beliefs.

That's not even going into social media's reward mechanisms: "We don't know" won't get 1000 RTs, "This is because of (outgroup)!" can get enough traction to go to war.

Combined, it's a golden age for fear-mongering and scapegoating.

Most windows cause some kind of audible buzzing sound and different windows have different sounds.

Most desktops I've used have had, due to poor signal design, some kind of coupling like this. Coming from CPUs, this is sort of shocking since the problem is technically harder for CPU packaging, traces, etc., because inductive coupling has such a large effect at high speed.
