@MattHodges

I know people studying Astronomy and related topics at the Open University, there seems to be an element of programming as they need to write software to help with data analysis,

I am sure however one of the students has written about ethics of space exploration or at least has an strong interest in this.

What would happen if you took a long piece of plastic pipe or guttering and put your phone on it, and tilted the pipe back and forth, perhaps putting the phone on a lego model

This would allow said phone to travel back and forth along the pipe.

It may confuse google a little, if everyone did then it would probably think you are just pacing back and forth.

if the idea works and lots of people did this, it would be rather funny to see googles stats getting all messed up.

@zleap People really need to move past the immediate urge to "exploit" things.

I guess it depends which social media we mean.

Centralised social media, that uses algorithms to feed people perhaps a single narrative is a potential risk.

Decentralised like the fediverse. We are in touch with a far wider range of people, which does give different perspectives.

Of course the question on going to mars to extract opal and exploit resources there is going to have to be discussed more widely at some point. Do we as humans even have a right to claim Mars as our own to do this.

But that debate is for another time.

I may have set a short story in an opal mining town on Mars for exactly this reason.

A stunning album of 355 of the original prints by the man who came to be known as 'Snowflake Bentley' was bought by London’s Natural History Museum in 1899, and the collection has now been digitised and made available to view online - Guardian

In 1952, Katherine Johnson heard there were open positions at the all-Black West Area Computing section at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics’ (later NASA) Langley laboratory.

With far too many accomplishments to list, her work was fundamental to marking a turning point in the space race with the Soviet Union. nasa.gov/content/katherine-joh

95% of Earth's opals come from Australia's Red Centre. After the Eromanga sea disappeared a few million years ago, it left vast tracts of Australian soil stained red by iron oxide, and the geologically rapid drying also formed an abundance of opals.

The surface of Mars went through a very similar process when the planet lost its oceans. So the Red Centre of Australia is very Mars-like, and there may be opals hiding under the Martian surface!

PM claimed “I‘ll deliver what I promise”. So why, *1 year* since ACRS scheme set up to resettle Afghans, have *none* been evacuated from Afghanistan? Instead they face torture & death. Their betrayal by ministers is beyond shameful

That does sound a good idea, however may want to add the condition that if the Canadian taxpayers pays for your medical training, then you owe it to the country to work there and practice medicine for a minimal amount of time.

Otherwise you will get people taking the training, then moving to another country, not paying taxes in Canada and other countries getting the benefit.

Mitigate the risk BEFORE it happens.

I still see posts with people wanting no politics. So I will leave a reminder:

1. Politics = how we make decisions about living together in society.

2. Not participating in politics = endorsing the status quo.

3. Refusing to participate in politics is a privilege. It is also a decision to abandon those in a more vulnerable position.

You might want to abstain and that's fine.
But someone has to combat injustice, racism, misogyny, anti-Semitism and anti-LGBTQ hate.

@AnarchoNinaWrites

You only need to look at recent right wing gains in Germany, Italy and France to see this. Oh and the UK isn't much better to be honest.

The polls were suggesting they were heading for 5 place back in October, I have not seen much news (sick of Prince harry dominating mostly) but would be good to see more opinion polls being published.
