The Atlantic and NYT and NPR are utterly failing America, as they focus on free speech for rich centrists—while neglecting free speech for average people.

The Founders didn’t put “wealthy people and their kids” into the First Amendment. Free speech “on campus” isn’t more important than oppressing kids and teachers in Florida.
DeSantis’s attack on American values and human rights should be front page news.

Our for-profit press is broken.

Here’s a picture of completely empty bookshelves in a Florida classroom after DeSantis ordered teachers to remove all books or else face felony charges

Imagine being a chuklefuck Republican and thinking this is a win.

No one is all that bothered it is about the interaction.

I was more thinking of the people who want the teaching removed as the course content is horrific and it has a negative effect on younger people learning the topic, this in part seems to have come from young people so wrapped up in cotton wool all the time, the idea the world is nasty is an alien concept.

Learning about the holocaust has to involve learning about very unpleasant actions, we can't water that down, so teach in full, so the true story put across.

Just make it age appropriate of course, but lets not dumb history down either.

Too many people still don't know Cop City— an attempt to cut down an Atlanta greenspace and neighbourhood food forest to build a COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY urban warfare training facility— is happening, let alone that APD has tear-gassed and even killed people protesting against them.

They claim that the protestor they killed shot at them first, but somehow, miraculously, only have video of the after-action, not the incident itself.

Y'know, back in 2014 many of us believed the proliferation of body cameras for cops would mean real oversight and accountability. Within months it became clear that the cameras would mean nothing, and not JUST because the cops themselves would oversee the footage rather than a 3rd party.

No, we realised then, and have had it proven time and time again, that bodycams don't mean shit for accountability, because no matter how much police negligence and malfeasance the videos show, LARGE SWATHES of the public and the media will go out of their way to excuse COPS' behaviour, and blame the victims for their own deaths. Especially if those victims aren't white.

Anyway. Check the tag #StopCopCity on some other platforms.

We could do with knowing about things like this at least a month in advance so people can help prepare and spread the word.

Interesting question, I do see more hashtags on here, and we can follow them, which really helps. But there are also more interesting things happening, from all over the world, I kinda get the impression with the varios algorithms, location is taken in to account so you find local people. Twitter for example assumes we are in to Soccer not NFL due to our location. Here if you are interested in physics you find pepple regardless of location or they find you.

Libraries are just amazing.

I’m on the other side of the world in a lovely public library in Australia & spotted a book I co-wrote 14 years ago. And no matter where you are, librarians are always the kindest, most helpful people you’ll find. Still, somehow, this magical system of exchanging #books & sharing ideas is entirely free.

We were taught general history at school, specific topics for say a term (12 weeks) I can't speak for those who studued history at GCSE, A'level and beyond at the time. I would suspect the higher up the level of study the more detail you go in to.

I am not sure, without looking what is in the current curriculum.

"Using a novel multi-cell type, human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived lung organoid (LO) system, validated against primary lung cells, we found that inflammatory cytokine/chemokine production and (IFN) responses are dynamically regulated autonomously within the lung following infection, an intrinsic defense mechanism mediated by surfactant proteins"

We can't tell them personally that they made a difference, but we can tell survivors about this, maybe that will give those survivors something, there is a huge legacy from the holocaust, and some of that legacy is saving lives now.

Decades of research prove that the best way to end homelessness is...

Give people a home. Seriously. That's it. No strings, no prerequisites, no faith-based, holistic, means-tested, yoga-cebtric meditation parole. Just a home.

Why,? I can understand disclosing parts of the medical information, as that may be relevent to undertaking sport, e.g if you are allergic and may need an epipen, or may have issues if you are diabetic and need to take in glucose.

But the school would have that info anyway.
