I agree with you here, will try and read the report later, it may be worth noting we need quality of activity rather than quantity.

I do make blog posts and embed posts from here as part of those posts, this means I can directly embed something interesting and write around it.

Try to encourage others to comment on fedi, or say if you want to comment go on fedi to do so (so people need to sign up).

I think we just need to carry on with what we are doing.

This is important work by @TodePond showing erroneously low engagement.

For mastodon to grow, it needs to be seen as an active place, by users and prospective users.

@benchwhistler

I agree, he needs to be put in his place and told robustly, problem is we can't even do that with a schoolyard bully, so there is little prospect of standing up to people like Putin or even DeStantis.

The west is so weak, and terrified of being offensive to someone that we are paralsed.

@benchwhistler

That could be viewed as escalation of the situation as the US is NATO, he could use that as an excuse to use nuclear weapons, or normal weapons and call it self defense against agression.

If putin is rational than maybe not, but he seems to be paranoid, to the point he sits well away from people and anyone who opposes him, keep dying or fall out of windows, poisoned or other untimely demise etc.

@siliconglen

I am sure most peoples priorities are going to be cost of living, housing, education, health care, law and order, environmental issues, for taxpayer funding, How much will replacing the monarchy cost scottish taxpayers in Scotland, with what, this will just divert money from other important issue and distract people from the real issues that need to be dealt with surely.

@Natsura @georgetakei
Well we just need to look at the 1930s to see similar persecutions of jews and minorities, after WWII started we know what happened from then on.

I think this was the point Gary Lineker tried to make, comparing the treatment of migrants to the jews, but I think the comparison to the 30s. This is how it started and it ended with the concentration camps.

I am sure there was a post here about a Trump rant about him wanting to shoot those who are LGBT. This was posted to trumps own network, as he would have got kicked off Facebook again, Trumo is clever, he got back on and will stay on, despite posting hate speach elsewhere.

It is Nick Clegg who is stupid for allowing him back on, if Trump runs for president and wins, are they going to er kick the president off mainstream social media, given the number of followers and income that generates.

@zleap @georgetakei we have done NOTHING yet he still treats us like we are below human... like our lives don't matter... i fear for the consequences if he were to win the 2024 presidental election...

@ayarocks @flexghost

The best thing about the internet is that there is a huge amount of information, you can find a guide for kids on quantum physics or download cutting edge academic papers on related tooics.

I have found quite a few PhD researchers on here, in fact one was tooting from a conference a while back, I asked about if a planet with an aurora would indicate a magnetic field and if this was also an essential pointer for life as our own magnetic field protects us from solar radiation, I did get a response. That is the nice thing, people post content and interact.

The Uk is pathetic, look at that indidcent in London where the local council wanted to rename 'Black boy lane' as it was seen by them as racist, there was a person locally who was Black and didn't object to it at all. To me the only racism there is the council making a adecision as they clearly assume people who are Black are not capable of doing that.

Schools are scared of the internet because of the information therein, all they need to do is teach how to find information and give people the tools to tell the difference between good / poor information.

I did a course online about e-safety, don't talk or trust strangers, so it makes people paranoid. I like the saying 'A stranger is a friend you have not met yet' I think it may be Irish (but not sure) we need to be giving people the tools to assess people, trust is earned but also based on behaviour chatting here is fine, just set some barriers and don't let people cross them. But the nice thing about interacting is there are people from all over the world.

have a look look at 'ask for evidence askforevidence.org/index this is really good, technollogy changes too fast for education systems to keep up, so we need to be arming people with the tools and techniques they need. The same techniques can be used to check on people, which can be positive if you see what other papers or research they are involved in.

The internet is there to explore and we need to protect it from corporate take over when information will then be only available to the 'select' few if we are not careful.

@ayarocks @flexghost

We are a minority all in one place, that makes us quite a force.

What are your thoughts about facebook setting up a mastodon server and joining the fedi, I am worried by that, what are their real intentions.

Saying that the BBC report seems to suggest it will be independent, so it may not even federate here, but will just rival what we have.

@ayarocks @flexghost

I think we can do our best, if people join mastodon they had better get used to the idea we have discussions on difficult and sensitive subjects.

We are far less interested in some escapade of a love island contestant, footballers wives, footballers or other celebrity rubbish.

Hopefully we can keep it that way eh.

Today is budget day, lets see what happens with that.

@ayarocks @flexghost

Same here and I live here, social media explodes with celebrity gossip and other nonsense.

Which is why I like it here. more interlect less celebrity garbage.

@oblomov @GossiTheDog

If those promoted managers had any ethics / morals they would resign in protest and solidarity with those who were sacked.

The US really does need to get in to the 2020s regarding employment rights and union rights.

@jobRxiv

This sounds interesting, I don't have a degree let along post degree qualifications, but I wish any applicants all the best.

Does this woman even know the difference between 1 million, 100 million and a billion, if she struggles with that she should join a year 4 or 5 class and they will explain the difference.

No wonder our economy is screwed, if you apply these numbers to finance you nee to tell the difference.

Braverman is a complete fool.

Microsoft Authenticator prompts the user to accept sharing analytics during the first launch. The prompt only dismisses when the user taps on "Accept." In fact, the app starts sending analytics even before accepting the privacy statement.🤦‍♂️

In this video, we downloaded the authenticator app from the App Store and we opened it as we monitored the iPhone network traffic. While the app was showing the permission prompt, we captured at least 3 calls made by the app sending diagnostics to Microsoft. The app sent 14 KB of analytics even before accepting the prompt.

The message on the prompt actually says that Microsoft needs to collect diagnostic data in order to keep Authenticator secure and up to date. 😵‍💫

@noahshachtman

This is an excellent piece, and very thought provoking. The problem in the UK is anyone who even critises Isreal is branded anti semetic. This to me is just crazy as there is a huge difference between anti jewish and anti Isreal government comments, given the opposition to the government from people living in Isreal on our logic they are anti semetic.

Netanyahu seems to be doing anything to hold on to power, his offenses are reported here, so how the heck he still holds on to power is also worrying, sort of like Donald Trump, trying to argue he won an election he lost. only for Netanyahu he managed to pull off staying in power.

I am kinda of guessing the Jewish people didn't vote for a right wing party, they didn't vote for Netanyahu but somehow he ended up with the largest party, does this imply a problem with the whole electorial system, especially in the west.

Until we are able to discuss this without the fear of being branded anti semetic, nothing much will happen, people justdon't listen to a viewpoin.

I got an hint of things to come when it was announced here the party that had won was right wing, the whole region needs stability and for that to happen we need to discuss the issue openly, throw ideas around and come up with something, no one solution is right, but 3-4 solutions may contain some useful ideas that if combined could really work.

I don't agree with the current land grab, demolishing peoples homes and taking over is to me just wrong, you would not put ip with that in other countries, but it is Isreal

Perhaps they need the same system the US has, a president can only serve 2 terms, then can't run for a 3rd let along subsequent tersm. A lower and upper chamber is also essential for the checks / balances on the policies of the ruling party.

Anyway will be interesting to see what happens, thanks for posting and would be good to discuss further, nice thing about Mastodon is we can have difficult but essential interlectual conversation.
