We know — and our "leaders" certainly know — that greenhouse gas emissions *must* go down, swiftly and urgently, if we are to have any hope of preserving even a limited version of our complex modern society.

So, why do emissions keep going up?

Why haven't we stopped burning fossil fuels?

Because there are profits to be made. 💵 Huge, massive, irresistibly tempting profits. 💵

Story from the Guardian...

"Monster profits for energy giants reveal a self-destructive fossil fuel resurgence"

theguardian.com/environment/20

While 2022 inflicted hardship upon many people around the world due to soaring inflation, climate-driven disasters, and war, the year was lucrative on an unprecedented scale for the fossil fuel industry, with the five largest western oil and gas companies alone making a combined $200 billion in profits.

In a parade of annual results released over the past week the “big five” – Exxon, Chevron, Shell, BP, and TotalEnergies – all revealed that last year was the most profitable in their respective histories.

And even though the rollout of renewable energy such as solar and wind is gathering momentum around the world, countries are still forging ahead with numerous “carbon bomb” projects that would push the world beyond agreed “safe” temperature limits. Last year, more than one trillion dollars were invested in fossil fuel infrastructure and extraction worldwide.

The sale of oil and gas remains so enticing that BP this week announced it is scaling back its climate ambitions, retaining its fossil fuel assets for longer than it previously expected. “We need continuing near-term investment into today’s energy system – which depends on oil and gas – to meet today’s demands and to make sure the transition is an orderly one,” said Bernard Looney, BP’s chief executive. “At the end of the day, we’re responding to what society wants.”

Sure, blame it on society. This has nothing at all to do with profits. 🙄 😡

I like UW photography a lot so I will submit that in lieu of my other favorite photography style, the feminine form...

Not good, one single set back and this happens, so there must be more to this.

Very disappointing for Spaceport Cornwall and the South West UK generally.

My experience with #Bookwyrm after a few days:
A good way to get an overview over your library and "want to read" list. The import function is great. If a book is not displayed directly, you can simply import it via the ISBN. The management of books in "shelves" is intuitive.
What I'm struggling with is the display of reactions to book comments. But so far I've only received some from #Fediverse (mostly Mastodon). For comments directly from Bookwyrm, display might be different.

To be continued.

In addition to making the leap to Mastodon, this year I am also leaping to a new position at the University of York. I'm rejoining the department of psychology almost 20 years after first starting my undergraduate there. A very happy homecoming.

If Trump is innocent then what are they worried about ?

The GOP is threatening to defund the prosecutor about to indict Trump

Good job, Republicans. You found that weaponization of government you were talking about

@pluralistic post today —and the Lee Vinsel piece linked there— sent me right back to a Fox Mulder line from Wetwired, X-Files S03E23 from 1996:

Mulder: "Yeah, but those studies are based on the assumption that Americans are just empty vessels ready to be filled with any idea or image that's fed to them like a bunch of Pavlov dogs and go out and act on it."

@barney

Given what he has done so far this is really scary for all of us,

I will share and boost.

Something is very wrong here.

A Florida Supreme Court justice just abruptly retired, only four months after he ran for another term, and won. This allows DeSantis to appoint his replacement.

DeSantis will have appointed 5 of Florida's 7 Supreme Court justices. He's taking nearly complete personal control of all three branches of Florida's government.

I was thinking open source / free software alternatives for a start, change the software that we use, so we can deny the big tech people income and profits,

Iceland got it right on banking fails, jail the people responsible, shame we can't do that in other countries eh.

@JoBlakely @pluralistic

People need to wake up and simply BOYCOTT big tech, it is not like there are no alternatives anymore.
