A lot of people are asking about long term plans for the publication. ... (🧵 1/?)

Clay Mineral Crystal Structure Tied to Composition

This diagram illustrates how the dimensions of clay minerals' crystal structure are affected by which ions are present in the composition of the mineral. Different clay minerals were identified this way at two sites, 'Yellowknife Bay' and 'Murray Buttes'

@jimgon

I think we should use the term 'Centralised social media companies" that way we are not going to confuse people with mastodo which is also social media, esp any US based instances.

Yes, but I think 16% ethanol kills normal yeast, so yield will only be 16%, hence distillation,

I think they have just created or found a new yeast that is more efficient, not fully sure on that, it was most likely posted here as a link to what is probably a paper on this < a week ago.

I got to go out so will look in my saved book marks when I get back unless someone else finds in the meantime.

@mxtthxw

Interestingly one day we may be able to do something similar to that, given if we can run a car on Ethanol then adding yeast to orange juice and fermenting you would end up with alcoholic orange juice, this could perhaps be distilled and used as fuel.

Ok there is a lot more to it than that, but we need to find alternative fuel sources for vehicles, then it would be interesting to see which fruit could make the best fuel for an internal combustion engine.

@mxtthxw

I got the impression that Gasoline is a refined petroleum, hence they call it gas for short. In the UK we can fill the car up with 'Juice' so in this context Juice is a nickname for Petrol or fuel. Juice can also I think refer to electrical power, give it more Juice = turn the power level up.

This may however be limited to certain areas where these terms have become more a local part of the language.

Here’s the other thing. If someone vehemently disagrees with their server blocking journa.host, they can always migrate to another server—or start their own.

The Colorado Plateau Dark Sky Cooperative is about to fire up a new "Quarterly Connections" webinar series beginning 5th April. Lots of interesting materials for those even outside the CP region.

Here's the thing. Do I understand why someone wants to transition? No.

Do I need to understand the need to transition to treat people who do want to do that as, you know, people? Also no.

Trans people are not a threat to my well-being and livelihood. Their methodology might differ from mine regarding how I achieve happiness and contentment, but I understand that need because they are *people.* Those of us that are not hateful, bitch ass bigots just want to be happy and care for our loved ones.

The rhetoric around trans people being a
threat is a white supremacist lie that aims to make people conform to a particular ideology as violently as possible.

The threat is white supremacy itself, trying to take away people's agency for the sake of a myopic global view that wants to implement stratification as the 'natural order.'

The same rhetoric being deployed against trans people has been used against every group white people deem undesirable; Indigenous, Black folks, Jews, the Irish, etc.

The conversation is about something other than making sense, and it's about brutally dominating people, whether it makes sense or not.

So nah, I'm not going to engage with any piece of shit about how 'trans people are the problem.'

Because they are not. The hate against them is.

We don't talk enough about the absurdity of rich countries emitting lots of CO₂ and then asking poor countries to offset those emissions.

At the bench doing chemistry. Go back to the computer to check something and the computer is weirdly off and maybe in the process of restarting (the bench is next to my desk, no power flickers that I noticed). It's now sending a signal to my HDMI monitor and not to my VGA monitor (normally it defaults to the VGA for some mysterious reason). No idea why.
Don't you just love technology?

I am grading my students' exams and I'm trying my best hard to stay kind but OH MY GOSH some of these students have so clearly not heard a single word I've said all semester that it is really hard...
