Long thread short: a lawyer presented court documents created with #ChatGPT filled with nonexistent sources. But go read the whole thing, because it's amazing.
#LLMs are not search engines. They are not databases. They produce plausible text but they only get facts right by accident. We absolutely need good education in what these tools can and cannot do, but the companies themselves are to blame for training users into using them in exactly the wrong way.

Twitter has abandoned the EU's code of practice on disinformation, Thierry Breton said late Friday, but Europe's internal markets commissioner insisted that "obligations remain" for the social networking giant.
"You can run but you can’t hide," Breton said, after confirming that the platform owned by Elon Musk had left the bloc’s disinformation code, which other major social media platforms have pledged to support.
I am sure 'good times roll' was a hit for 'the cars' too.

A lawyer representing a man who sued an airline relied on ChatGPT to help prepare a court filing.
It did not go well.

The Security Hole at the Heart of ChatGPT and Bing https://www.wired.com/story/chatgpt-prompt-injection-attack-security/
Indirect prompt-injection attacks can leave people vulnerable to scams and data theft when they use the AI chatbots
@zleap @admin @rolle Pretty much. I’m not sure what the odds are that a case gets accepted & worked on. I’ve filed several reports yrs ago & got zero results. Some cases get enforced & it’s published here: https://www.enforcementtracker.com/ perhaps to maintain the façade that the GDPR is successful. The #GDPR seems to just be a tool to make ppl less resistant to the #digitalTransformation.
@zleap the difference versus a Turing test is that in the Blade Runner world, the "androids" are designed without the ability to have human feelings, and the Voight-Kamff test is designed to test emotional response. So, basically they can pass a Turing test - they can have a normal human conversation - but if you check things like pupil dilation and heart rate when asking them an emotional question you can tell they're not human.
I wonder what it would make of the limerick data tried to repeat in Star Trek TNG, I think it was the episode the naked now, or the naked time, one of them was TOS the other was TNG
I think he got as far as
There was a lady from Venus, whos head was the same of a ....
at which point I think Picard stopped him, data being an android was confused by the meaning.

So odds are stacked against the very people this law is designed to protect.

This reminds me of the conversation between Tuvok and 7of9 in the episode mortal coil
7 observes all the different traditions around what she says is a fact, all living things perish, Tuvok points out that se is no longar part of the borg collective and is mortal now.
7 replies by saying that her memories and recollections, experiences when she was borg will always be part of the collective so in a way she is immortal in that sense, which she says gives her some comfort.
I wasn't sure what a Voight-Kampff test is so have tried to look it up, took a while as one site had a security issue, wikipedia seems to explain as part of a bladerunner article.
https://www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/story.php?title=voigt-kampff-test-quiz
I am guessing this is a test to determine if a person is a human or not, how does this differ from a Turing test?
This still seems to be bladerunner related.
Excellent point there. I wonder if at some point we will be able to block a whole domain but have exceptions to that blanket block. It does demonstrate the problems of whole domain blocks.

Careful before blocking newsie(dot)social! They’re also hosting Doctors without borders.
It is absolutely essential that Doctors without borders stay available to the widest audience possible. They’re new both here and on bluesky and re-gaining their audience is already hard enough to not fediblock them on top of that.
Whatever you decide to do, please be sure to not harm their work.
With regard to Distance learning, you may want to give the Open University a mention (https://www.open.ac.uk) they have been doing distance learning since the early 1970s, and have used TV broadcasts in the early mornings for some of their lesson content.
Looks interesting, thank you.
