We ran an editorial at Scientific American about school start times, and a teacher and his students wrote to us with their own stories and got their school to change its schedule (!) and summer break is a great time for all school districts to fix the problem of too-early starts scientificamerican.com/article

@MichaelTBacon @futurebird

Yeah good point, like science forums as it is friendly but the people there do actually know their stuff.

@zleap @futurebird We're also at a point where online information is increasingly suspect and flooded with bad info. ChatGPT will confidently give you a very wrong answer, particularly on things like this.

Expert forums are probably going to get more important.

@Miriamm

Can we just replace Homophobes with BIGOTS we can cover more ground with it then. ?

Happy Pride Month to the LGBTQIA+ Community! Amidst the celebrations, let's not forget that this year, more than ever, the community continues to face battles for survival and acceptance. I stand with you all, ready to fight for love, equality, and respect!

@JMo

Seems like the Russians did the same in Ukraine too, took kids away from their parents.

@futurebird

I think the term 'google it' probably means one should try and find the answer or at least make some effort before asking. However I agree this is less helpful, our vocabulary has changed so we google something rather than search it implies google is the only way to search for information, this is not helped by basic IT classes using google and not mentioning alternatives.

Same goes for promoting facebook or zoom, it makes it much harder for replacements to get a proper foothold.

@AnnieBuddy @juddlegum

It seems Iceland did that with their bankers, and there has been little negative effect on Iceland as a country as a result.

@zleap Well, yes. Twitter has been a lost cause in this regard for a long time.

I find the degradation of search engines, however, much more dangerous and frightening. In the early 2000s, there were lots of different search engines, and Google was not in fact my favourite of them. It got worse when it became almost impossible to do exact string searches because they started doing things like stemming words, etc, so you couldn't find something based on the fact that a very exact phrase occurred in it.

That, at least, makes technological sense (indexing is cheaper that way), but with the excuse of "use AI for everything", we've seen a simultaneous drop in the ability to use search at all in the way most of us have for years, and I don't think it's coincidental.

It's bad when big platforms are overtaken by fascists. It's worse when the only reference to encyclopedia has been, effectively.

There was a time when people like the Proud boys would have been branded silly little boys. That is no longer politically correct to say that as we have to 'consider the feelings' so we don't up set them (they don't seem to care about upsetting others)

I think there are times when we need to tell the PC lobby to get lost, and we just call these idiots what they are, silly little4 boys, who need a good hiding to teach them right from wrong.

It really is nice that #Mastodon is featured on the App Store today.

I've been noticing that a few folks at
#Apple have become more enthusiastic about the #Fediverse during the last 6 months, to the point that #iMessage now recognizes Mastodon links.

Again, more speculation from my part, but it wouldn't surprise me if Apple was considering more ways to bring Fediverse adoption to the masses.

Worth remembering that the reason Rishi and the Cabinet Office are fighting furiously to keep Johnson's WhatsApps redacted is likely nowt to do with protecting Johnson.

It's because half the government, including Rishi, were the people he was talking to.

@mrloislane

You respond to that by saying at least I don't follow a god whos followers claim sexually abusing children is the will of god.

@glightly

I think once in a while you need to get away from it all, a hobby or interest can be a good form of ecapism. I don't have a smart phone, and limit my viewing of the news.

@gwynnion @e_urq @tzimmer_history

Well it seem as if the GOPs moral high ground lies in Religion, specifcally the religion associated with the church, the fact the church has committed so much child abuse, and covered it up, discredits any argument that it has any sort of moral high ground as justification for these ANTI LGBTQA policies.

@grrrr_shark

The rise of the far right on twitter, and the recent announcement that Twitter is to remover itself from the code of conduct around misinformation, makes sense, it makes it a platform which is far more friendly to the far right.
