@garius
I can sometimes imagine the temptation to move the sword when knighting people from one shoulder to the other in a swift horizontal straight line must be very powerful, the only problem is doing so would result in the carpet being stained.

Yes, I agree, I am here becuase it is NOT facebook, what also worries me is all the baggage that comes with meta, celebrities etc, We have people on here who are not celebs as such, they hare proper jobs in high end research, I seem to be following a lot of people with PhDs etc, actual scientists who are dedicated to their work. People here post intelligent and intellectual content, but also respond rationally to posts and correct people in a way that is helpful.

@Gargron
Honestly I am very concerned that federation with Meta will undermine Mastodon's core mission, which you proudly display on your website's landing page.

It's safe to assume that Meta will continue to algorithmically decide what appears on their users' feeds. After all, Meta is really in the advertising business, not the people-connecting business!

And they have a pool of what, a billion users that will immediately have the ability to sign in? Even with a small percentage of that, any instances federating with them will start seeing a lot more of whatever Meta is pushing to their own users' feeds, as those users become more likely to boost or share it.

Users on Mastodon/other Fediverse instances will find that their reach expands if they play to the Meta algorithms, and the 'non-algorithmic' culture here will quickly turn into the same inauthentic, commodified influencer posting that corporate, for-profit social media has become known for.

Federating with Meta could well end up ruining the exact thing that makes Mastodon and the Fediverse so exciting and appealing.

I hope that admins of large instances take some time to deeply consider these possibilities before federating with a company that has done so much damage to society.

So in the true Schooby doo tradition

"I would have gotton away with it, had it not been for your meddling kids, or in this case perhaps meddling non etonians"

@TJ1001

I remember once we were in I think Windsor and could see over to Eton, there was a wooden dock thing and some boats, I am sure most normal people wear boating gear, etc when near water like this, this lot I saw were in their long gowns, they looked like a bunch of morons.

@danwentzel

If it wasn't for the fact that as part of our drive to explore the solar system, we are very careful to ensure that robotic probes are not contaminated with anything nasty, we could send the whole lot of these corrupt politicians to Mars.

Johnson (sorry, more ranting)

@clarebee

At least in the US a president can only serve two terms, (8 years) as far as I understand it there is no limit in other countries.

@jk

I am thinking more about the result, the recent council elections saw the Tories suffer big losses, if the same happens here, it will have wider consequences.

People in the UK are trying to deal with multiple issues, including cost of living and the party in power seem to be stagnated.

We are sick of it and elections are a chance for voices to be heard.

@locksmithprime

Lets hope it is a turning point, we need some sort of social media controls and education reform so people are less easily influenced by misinformation as they can think critically and hopefully make the right decisions.

@jk

The real test of all this is going to also come down to the resulting by-election too.

@Swede1952

is there a Blue Jay Way in Los Angeles, as cited in the Beatles' song of the same name. ?

My wifi is down and I’m on one bar of cellular on a hill 300 yards from the house trying to answer accumulated texts and emails, so I can’t upload the audio, but rest assured there are two grey tree frogs, pretty high up in separate trees, calling to each other on either side of me. Best of luck, lil buddies. Thanks for the greatest stereo soundtrack ever.

@markusl

Indeed, while at the same time our leaders try and tell leaders such as putin to respect international law, no wonder putin et al throw things back in our faces. We need change at the top down, esp with the rise of China and other countries. who while we are distracted are, to be fair building their skills and infrastructure in order ensure they are fit for the 21st century.

Why have we recently had 2 major hacks in the UK, one on serco and one on other infrastructure, hardly made much news, but it shows what happens when the education system fails to keep up, some of the reasons for the weakness are shockingly simple, still have unencrypted databases and simple passwords. I am not a cybersecurity or info sec expert but common sense tells me that databases and critical infrastructure should be properly protected.

They help Kherson, here are ordinary guys, they don’t sleep for 3 days and save people 24/7

@mcnado

Let them defend this, at least the US voters will hopefully have woken up by then and will a better idea of who to vote for in 2024., as in not the GOP,.

Between this and all the anti LGBTQA laws, anti abortion laws, book bans, drag show bans what will it take ?
