The BBC news boast about their new verify service to fact check information, meanwhile they talk about Ron De Santis as some sort of US saviour, and make very little (if any, but a passing) mention of all these book bans, anti trans / gay laws, that De Santis is fully supprting.
Just awful: A Missouri school board is set to decide whether to remove "Maus" after employees flagged it for review, due to a law banning "explicit sexual material."
I spoke to Art Spiegelman. He fears our country is "yearning" for "authoritarianism."

Did you know that a 13 year old enslaved girl, Grace Wisher, helped create America’s flag that also inspired the national anthem?
You would have known this but K-12 public schools in America primarily highlight the historical achievements of only white men. #FlagDay2023
Our lawmakers should follow the lead of our neighbors in Illinois who are protecting free speech. Politicians have no right taking away the freedom of students to read just because they personally disagree with a book & want to further a political agenda. https://www.nwitimes.com/news/local/education/illinois-bans-book-bans-as-indiana-opens-door-to-more-library-materials-challenges/article_8a016198-095e-11ee-a793-67ee41749054.html #HoosierMast #Indiana #ACLUIN

Okay, Mastodon friends, I rarely ask for amplification about my day job, but I personally pushed for my employer to make a big investment in enabling the fediverse, and I'd love for everyone to show that the support is appreciated. On June 28, you can join us for a (FREE!) hands-on conversation about how the Fastly team worked to support @Mastodon while the service was under a *massive* DDOS attack. Everyone who cares about scaling the fediverse should join: https://learn.fastly.com/security-mitigating-ddos-and-traffic-surges-with-mastodon @devs

Why is it so hard to identify and target the people who facilitate human trafficking, or is it a case of there is a way, but no actual will to act.
The US Cyber and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has decided that internet-facing management interfaces can’t be secured properly, and has told US government agencies to disable them. They have 14 days to comply. #CyberSecurity

So if we take AI now at age 0-1, what happens when it gets to 10-14 years and some how goes through the human equivalent of puberty, and starts to make irrational decisions.
My cousin had an MSX. I had a ZX Spectrum.

There are lots of sites that have cookies or other trackers proided by facebook for example. I just wonder how much do the web designers actually understand what these components are doing, and if they understand the GDPR enough to work out if a tracker is potentially breaching data laws.
Looking at some of grass verges we have locally, it does not take much to cause serious damage, most are yellow colour due to weeks of dry weather and lack of significant rainfall.
Sure they do recover, but there is probably a point where they won't recover.
In light of the recent #redditblackout , it seems appropriate to repost the fantastic @catvalente essay:
Stop Talking to Each Other and Start Buying Things: Three Decades of Survival in the Desert of Social Media
I’m so tired of just harmlessly getting together with other weird geeks and going to what amounts to a digital pub after work and waking up one day to find every pint poisoned. Over and over again. Like the poison wants us specifically. Like it knows we will always make its favorite food: vulnerability, connection, difference. I’m so tired of lunch photos and fanfic and stupid jokes and keeping in touch with family across time zones and making friends and starting cottage industries and pursuing hobbies and meeting soulmates and expressing thoughts and creating identities and loving TV shows and reading books and getting to know a few of your heroes and raising kids and making bookshelves and knitting and painting and fixing sinks and first dates and homemade jam and, yes, figuring out what Buffy characters we are, listening and learning and hoping and just fucking talking to each other weaponized against us. Having our enthusiasm over the smallest joys of everyday life invaded by people who long ago forgot their value and turned into fodder for the death of thought, the burial of love.
These were our spaces, little people who just wanted to connect. And one by one, they get turned into battlefields where we have to fight just as hard to exist as we do in the real world. And every time a few more people you never thought the Absorbaloff of hatred and gleeful sadism would slurp up don’t come along to the next safe place, and start trying to take it away before anyone can get there.

The fact that the evidence against Donald Trump is so powerful is a good explanation as to why no one will help represent him.
Hopefully once this is over, there will need to ensure that there are proper systems in place re documents of any kind, surely even Joe Biden should not be removing documents without a proper system in place to track where they are.
Seems like incompetence within the US system has allowed this to happen too. Working in schools I can't 'just' take files home with me.
What IS it with people in 2023. ?
