In some ways one we should be very thankful for, at least for the moment.

Putin has reportedly spoken to Lukashenko over the phone again and thanked him for his work negotiating Prigozhin's retreat. These two dictators have now saved each other's asses at their most dire moments. A true bloody bond. t.co/pDEPpy22bt

@fawfulfan

Prigozhin is angry about the fact his own troops (who is clearly cares about) are being used as cannon fodder for putins Army. This has been brewing for a while with reports of low ammunition and lack of equipment, so he has tried to ask for more resources. Yesterday or the day before there were reports that russia wanted to take control of the wagner group (or at least the russian military did) Prigozhin clearly didn't want this, so decided to demand a meeting with the 2 russian military leaders, I would assume to disucuss the matter, as this didn't happen he went through with the threat of marching on Moscow to get his meeting.

Belarus, leader clearly saw a pending bloodbath, so stepped in to try and de-escalate the situation and broker some sort of agreement, which is the right thing to do.

Full statement from the Wagner chief, Yevgeny Prigozhni:

"They wanted to disband the Wagner military company. We embarked on a march of justice on 23 June.

In 24 hours, we got to within 200 km of Moscow. In this time we did not spill a single drop of our fighters' blood.

Now the moment has come when blood could be spilled. Understanding responsibility [for the chance] that Russian blood will be spilled on one side, we are turning our columns around and going back to field camps as planned."

They probably saw about Musk and Zucks wanting to have a punch up in a cage and decided get there first.

Ah yes, All things must pass, I am a fan of the Beatles. I really like and appreciate the contribution that George Harrison made to the group.

Nice to see #Mastodon is becoming as good as #Twitter used to be in it's heyday when global news is breaking.

Screw it - if we're gonna have a nuclear war with Russia I'm having unprotected sex.

@SocraticEthics

This story is developing by the second, I know Checnia is not exactly on good terms with Russia either

Please boost!

To anyone in #Moscow or #Rostov, please post any eyewitness footage of what's going on there

@mapcar

I tried one of the cli methods earlier and that worked, also took a look at thnar and this has some really nice rename features.

As there is no rush for this, I am going to use this as an opportuniy to

a) learn some more command line tools
b) make a few vokoscreen videocasts of various tools in action as it is a good learning and teaching opportunity.

Okay. I’ll cage fight a billionaire if they pay off my Honda Civic.

The situation in Russia, is now surely past the point of no return, it has to now be concluded with either the death or arrest of Putin, otherwise he will come back, may be not stronger but far more brutal than we can imagine. This could result in him bombing / killing his own people (Like saddam and others have done) in order to plant his absolute authority on the country and anyone who stands in his way will meet an untimely and perhaps brutal demise.

My evidence for this could be more rooted in the fact those who oppose putin have fallen out of windows of multi storey buildings, one or two people may be rather clumsy, but quite a few have met this end, not to mention use of nerve agents etc.

Look at that: they're actually being welcomed as liberators.

Indeed.

We have long since established that The Simpsons is a deep source of wisdom on your tiny planet.

@MartinVeart

Good point, plus Putin et al are wanted by the ICC so I would suspect there is a significant bounty for that, oddly I suspect the wagner group are equally wanted by the ICC. But putin is on an arrest warrant.

If Wagner bring and end to this AND hand over putin and other russian leaders it puts them in a huge bargaining position as they brought an end to a brutal and bloody war, that has cost thousands of lives, displaced millions of people and caused a huge amount of damage to buildings, infrastructre and the environment. They could negotiate a deal or something.

@MartinVeart

I think those military generals on the ground also care about the troops under their command, thanks to those at the top they are just being slautered. Something no military leader wants. So those on the front line have to follow orders as to those under then, regardless of how bad those orders are.

They also know as front line leaders it is them who are at risk of being hauled in to the ICC, for war crimes, etc while those who told them to do things, are likely to end up getting away with it. So I don't think those commanders are going to let that happen either. Following orders is not going to be a good defense in the Hague, but if they are going to stand trial so should those at the very top of the military chain of command.

Following orders is also fine, IF you have the right eqipment, training for the job, most of the first in to the Ukraine were told it was a military exercise, so were also lied to.

This war has been a disaster from the start, perhaps these front line leaders are not about to take the punishment for that.

Watching the unfolding coup in Russia with interest. The outcome will very much depend on whom the military back. One wonders whether Putin has overplayed his hand and the humiliation of the Russian military has become too much for them to bear?
(Pun loosely intended).
