@MichaelPorter @futurebird

You are up against those very short videos, hence the need to keep things interesting.

@futurebird I’m naturally enthusiastic about just about everything I taught, so I didn’t have to put on an act. But it also occurs to me that if a teacher isn’t interested or enthusiastic about a subject, how are the students going to be? They’ll look at the teacher and think, wow, even *they* don’t think this stuff is interesting…

I guess the other pitfall is the tiktoks, reels, YouTube shorts, etc. that everyone produces these days is SO!!!! EXCITING!!! THEY’RE NEVER! CALM! ABOUT! ANYTHING! (viz also the thumbnails that are always 🫨‼️💥) – Not my style, so do I come across as boring compared to that?

@mastodonusercount

Are there any similar stats for other services such as Peertube, Pleroma,PixelFed etc ?

Late this afternoon, purely by accident, we discovered a real-life, ye olde fashioned English sweetshop in a nearby village.

It's got the whole wall of sweets in jars, with lots to chose from, and there are old fashioned scales that measure by the ounce. And it smells like sugar and peppermint. And it's awesome! And whatever you pick gets measured into pretty little pink and white candy-striped paper bags. Squee!

While we were there--making observations purely for research purposes and definitely not because we're secretly five-year-olds whenever we encounter a wall of sweeties--a couple of kids came in after making an epic mission from two streets down on their bikes.

It was so much fun to see how solemn they were in making sure they were spending their pocket money for maximum value. We made sure we kept our expressions just as solemn when we agreed with them that they were making a sound financial investment.

The sweeties you see on the scales are just a few we had to take away... for "research" purposes obviously. Not for eating in one go. Because I would totally not be the kind of person who would accidentally disappear an entire bag of licorice bullets in the space of 15 minutes without realising it. Not at all. Nope. Not me. :blobsmilehappyeyes:

Reposting my #Introduction after server move!

I'm a #Black #neurodivergent (#ADHD) #disabled ace woman in her late 30's based in the UK. I have a #chronicillness (#MECFS)- former nurse but housebound now. I am extremely concerned about the way our society is going so I spend my time reading, doing serious #philosophy & trying to build #community despite having severe social anxiety. I'm also a dedicated longtime #Buddhist practitioner. I study #Japanese as a hobby (& yes, I do like #anime!)

I feel the need to AGAIN repeat this, and I hope you’ll share it so everyone in every city sees it, understands it and remembers it…

ALWAYS LET PEOPLE OUT OF THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT TRAIN/BUS, OR THE ELEVATOR, FIRST BEFORE GETTING IN!

It’s not just OBVIOUS etiquette, it’s basic GEOMETRY!

And here's another book I’ve just finished, for anyone who has studied (or is studying) maths. It’s a lovely gallop through the parts of mathematical history that we don’t hear about, steering away from the stories that focus on the “Great Men” of the white western world, and digging around in a far more global and diverse view of how mathematics was developed. Especially highly recommended for anyone teaching maths at any level. It’s out in a couple of weeks. #maths #books #history

This is amazing so please boost

The Banned Book Club is a project of the Digital Public Library of America. You download their Palace e-reader and choose Banned Book Club as your #library. It gives you access to all (most?) of them plus others

I guess if you live in a liberal state you might not need it but it's worth checking out

Will Russia 🇷🇺 mercenary force Wagner attack Poland 🇵🇱 at Belarus 🇧🇾 border‽ (WW3 🤯)

@darnell

The west is sleepwalking in to a disaster here, combine that with climate change and the human race is pretty much finished.

Just like the Antarctic sea ice graphs and the North Atlantic ocean temperature graphs — both of which you've probably seen — the graph below is almost unbelievably stunning and ominous.

What you have here are the top 30 hottest months ever recorded. The last one shown is this month, July of 2023, and it's WAY above any of the others.

A global temperature rise of .32°C in a single month doesn't even seem like it should be possible. But that's what is happening. That's the dire new world we're living in.

🚨 This is a climate emergency.🚨
