While little known in US, glacial flooding could threaten about 15 million people around the world, researchers say.

It is a shame that Desantis' name name isn't Richard, if it was the nickname DICK would be very apt.

It does seem he is losing badly in some areas but seems to be too stupid to figure out why,.

Suppose you were trying to invent a bright orange powder that could easily dye clothes and be hard to wash off. Using your knowledge of quantum mechanics you'd design this symmetrical molecule where an electron's wavefunction can vibrate back and forth along a chain of carbons at the frequency of green light. Absorbing green light makes it look orange! And this molecule doesn't dissolve in water.

Yes: you'd invent turmeric!

Or more precisely 'curcurmin', the molecule that gives turmeric its special properties.

The black atoms are carbons, the white are hydrogens and the red are oxygens.

Read on and check out what pure curcurmin looks like.

Can someone tell our Tory Government that, but say unless they get rid of big oil and protect the climate there will be huge number of migrants heading our way to escape the heat caused by western failure to sort out the climate crisis.

See how quickly they then act to stop new oil drilling.

Unless we change course immediately, large parts of the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent will become uninhabitable for humans (along with many plant and animal species) within only a few decades.

Hundreds of millions of people — potentially billions — will be forced to migrate. Or die.

Iraq, with its population of about 43 million, is one of the hottest places on Earth. Matters are made worse as power shortages mean that people have to rely on generators to keep their cooling systems on during the heat.

Extreme temperatures and a lack of electrical power are a deadly combination, and one that is being felt across Iraq.

The country is one of the world’s most vulnerable to climate change, faced with scorching heatwaves, reduced rainfall, water scarcity, and desertification.

Last weekend in Iraq, a nationwide power outage caused by an accidental fire at a power station in the southern province of Basra led to the almost total collapse of the country’s power grid on Saturday afternoon, adding to the suffering of many across the southern and central regions of Iraq.

On Wednesday, Baghdad recorded a high of 49C (120F) and in Basra temperatures went beyond 51C (123F); the hottest city in the world this week, according to the monitoring group Hot Cities.

The temperature across several Iraqi governorates including Maysan, Dhi Qar, Muthanna, Diwaniyah, and Najaf, in the southern part of the country also exceeded 50C (122F), according to the Iraqi Meteorological Organisation.

“Iraq is facing three perfect storms in the next decade,” said Azzam Alwalsh, environmental expert and founder of Nature Iraq. “Yet decision makers are not even aware of the abyss facing us, let alone thinking about solutions and the time needed to implement them.”

Which unless something is done and quickly to stop them, the US is going to pay a huge price.

I think what is needed is a international boycott of Tourism in Florida, in order to stand side by side with the LGBTQ communities to send a clear message.

Agreed, the war was Illegal and Tony B Liar should have been hauled in to the ICC and tried then punished.,

Sorry for my error, but thank you for clearing that up. I am under the impression that Iran is actually quite diverse too, I did read about a street where there is a Mosque, Synagogue and Church.

Western media / governments probably want to suppress that so they can portray Iran as part of an Axis of evil, despite not actually ever having recently attacked another country,

@WahbAllat@mas.to @breadandcircuses

I got the impression, that under saddam, despite him being brutal, Iraq was fairly safe, partly as those who could / tried to cause trouble where dealt with with deadly, robust force. Granted at times this may have included use of chemical weapons.

During the wests invasion, other than it being illegal, no plans were made on what to actually do, so disband the police, army (who knew exactly who troublemakers werem, and kept them under some degree of control)

Hence Iraq descended in to chaos, groups such as ISIS rose up out of this and the west was powerless and clueless as to how to deal with things in an effective way.

As Iraq, I think is mostly an Islamic country, then let people there decide what they want.

This is LITERALLY a violation of the first and 14th amendments

We need a special federal agency that immediately pros utes local officials (state or county) who do this unconstitutional crap

@flexghost

Why are nicknames banned, ? Most people named Robert have no problem being called Bob.

The loonies have really taken over the asylum in Florida.

The party of “free speech” and “personal freedom” strikes again

Anti-Trans Florida:

An Orange County ordnance states students and teachers must use pronouns corresponding to biological sex

Nicknames are banned as well. Sorry, Bob, Jen, Steve…

This comes after HB 1521 making it a crime in FL to use a restroom not aligned with biological sex

And HB 1069 making teaching human sexuality or gender a crime

Republicans made this a war

🔥️ It took AIDS activists 10 years to break through the societal denial and start getting real shit done.

I hope we have 10 years before Long COVID becomes a society-defining crisis.

Hey Ohio Mastodonians, if you have not done so already, today is your day to vote on Issue 1. Don't forget to disappoint the conservative politicians who want to take away your rights and scheduled a vote on a traditionally low-participation date to sneak it by you! Here's a helpful sign about it. #uspol

@SrRochardBunson

There was a time when if you had the wrong attitude at school or home, adults would put you firmly in your place. I am NOT going to turn thjis in to a debate on how to actually dicipline people, but they need to learn respect for others, this starts in the home before kindergarten oir nursery / school.

Of course at one time, if you behaved badly your parents would be socially judged accordingly, toy could easily lose your job, home etc due to this, so you made sure your offspring understood what is expected as to how to behave.

It starts with parents who know right from wrong, who are willing to enforce expectations of behaviour, good manners, courtesy and respect and model good behavior at the same time. It starts with politicians who make the laws, actually being able to abide by them.

It also starts with people taking RESPONSIBILTY for actions, words and behaviouurs accepting their punishment not having others make excuses.

I am NOT sure what the answer is, but a whole generation or two have been failed by the system and poor parenting, probably just a tiny fraction of people. but this is enough to cause huge problems for society, and no one has the strength to stand up to them and say !! NO !! as they think that breaches peoples rights. NO need to be enforced, with a short, sharp shock. Oddly we see this with trump and it demonstrates rather than being a barrier, behaving in a negative way, treating women as second class citizens, being racist, and discriminatory can get you the keys to the highest office, where at one time the only keys you got were to the local street, homeless and proably penniless. It is clear Trump has got his own way for most of his life.

We need decent role models, high quality education at ALL levels and not leave anyone behind, not too difficult surely, not everyone is suited to academic education, some people are practical in which case let them go down that route, work that leads to high quality qualifications and experience.
