Further to my previous post, what is the likelihood that when these areas are rebuilt, the planners and builders etc take in to consideration the environment and:

Replace roads with road / tracks for trams to reduce traffic, make it so people can move around without the need for cars AND OR
Replace gas stations with electric car charging points
Ban the sale of Gasoline powered cars
Build all new homes with electric car charging points
Somehow design the towns with fire breaks, how about canals which are of course water, these could break up the town with water, which may in theory stop or at least slow down spread of fire
Build all new homes with solar panels and other energy saving designs so that everything is super efficient
Build more turbines or make use of water / hydro electric power, esp given Hawaii is an island

And other ideas that going forward will help the planet.

Firstly our thoughts should, of course, go out to the victims of the devastating fires in Hawaii. However when we reflect, we should consider that, looking at the before / after satellite images, mother nature has achieved in a few hours or days, what Putin managed to achieve in Ukraine in a few months of bombings etc.

Some of the satellite images of Ukraine bare a resemblance to what is left after these fires.

This should serve as a serious wake up call to everyone that we need to tackle the climate crisis immediately otherwise other places will suffer the same fate.

Small companies such as @disroot
offer cloud services. I don't think they are billionaires. I use disroot for e-mail and cloud.

Ideally people would run their own, however this is probably costly, more difficult and also takes up time, with updates etc.

There are ethical alternatives, we just need to promote them a lot more.

i went driving for the first time in quite a while and got (rightfully) honked at ;w;
was stressed about it the entire way, but look who came around and made my day!

It is about time ALl referees wore mics and cameras, any abuse in any shape way or form report to the FA (immediate world wide / life time ban) inform other sport bodies so the ban extends to other sports.

Police prosecute, life time criminal record, addition to adult barred list (life) and if a junior coach add to child barred list too.

Empoloyer able to sack said person immediatly with zero come back.

Perhaps then, and only then will the consequences be strong enough to make people THINK TWICE. Safeguarding is essential, lets start by ridding ourselves of bad coaches. If the offense is by a parent, then they should be subject to the same sanctions as so they can't every coach, in fact if they are that abusive, take their kids away.

The harsher the penalty, and as long as it is enforced with a rod of iron, it may actually make a difference.

If we could also get people to stand up, stand together and demand action on climate but specific actions as in oil, or deep sea mining and say NO NO NO, to those who have the power to make decisions, then protests against abortion rights won't be in vain, which they will be if humans wipe themselves out due to climate damage.

Humans want to eliminate life where life originated—in the deep seas. Not enough to devastate the fish, we now want to devastate the sea beds, as we scavenge with our mega scrapers and buckets for our precious metals to build our “green” future. Mining companies are cheered as environmentalists. Mining is talked of as sustainable. Think of the devastation the mining oligarchs do on land. Now think of the devastation they will do in the deep seas, where their dirty work won’t be seen?

Agreed, perhaps we can consider this too,

England womens soccer team have seen huge success in the european cup and currently in the world cup (hopefully going al the way).

The UK newspapers last week gave away a nice poster of all the Mens premier league fixture, but they have not done a similar poster for the womens soccer.

England also got to the netball world cup final, but that news is pushed down to small news stories.

Until this changes, girls won't feel as if they are important when it comes to sport. That has a knock on effect to other subjects.

Thanks, may be there are more people on fedi who can help here and suggest solutions.

I would suspect the solution needs to come from young people if they can say what they would like to do, based on their interests, As adults we need to find a way to faciliate that.

I can do basic chemistry at the stem group, if someone said they wanted to do fractional distillation as they liked that at school I would be serously stuck.

@Ruth_Mottram @gwagner

I am at a loss as to what to suggest here too, I find it difficult to even reach out to people, I just run the groups, the library deal with publicity.

On Saturday Paignton library has a family fun festival, so I am going to run an activity around a sand box, stones and making craters. Simple yes, but it will be good to try and engage with people, so after that will be good to see if there is an increased engagement in the other groups I run.

@Ruth_Mottram @gwagner

And the harder you try and push (well encourage them) the more resistant they become.

@zleap @gwagner it sounds very cool. Right now my biggest problem would be persuading my kids to even go through the door...

It is easier to bury our heads in the sand than try and fight against big corporations, massive legal budgets and good lawyers who are in the back pockets of politicians.

What do you think to the question posted a while back asking if all these scare tactics are having the opposite effect on trying to tackle the climate crisis.

I pointed out that the situation is bleak and people want to be told the truth.
