In 1995, 14 wolves were released in Yellowstone National Park.

No one expected the miracle that the wolves would bring.

It started with the wolves hunting the deer, this led to a rapid decrease in the deer population. The wolves' presence also made the deer avoid parts in the park where they were and easy prey.

Thanks to the deer's absence, those parts started to regenerate. Forests of aspen and willow trees started to flourish.

That's when things really started to happen. With trees and bushes came more berries and bugs. As soon as that happened, various bird species started moving in.

With the increasing tree population, also another species was attracted. The beaver, previously extinct in the region, moved back. And the dams they built provided habitats for otters, muskrats and reptiles.

The wolves also killed coyotes, which meant more hawks, red foxes, badgers and weasels in the park. Even the population of bald eagles and ravens rose.

But here's where it gets really interesting. The wolves changed the behavior of the rivers. With more balance between predator and prey came the possibility for other species to thrive. There was less erosion because of increased vegetation. And the river banks were stabilized, the channels narrowed, more pools formed, and the rivers stayed more fixed in their courses.

So the wolves did not only transform the great ecosystem of Yellowstone, they also changed the park's physical geography.

Nature has a wonderful way of recovering if left to do so eh.

For younger kids, a good introduction to the legacy of Katherine Johnson (and Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughn, and Christine Darden) is the beautifully written and illustrated adaptation of “Hidden Figures” by Margot Shetterly and Laura Freeman.

A while back an elder told me a story from his #Indigenous Nimiipuu heritage, about Coyote killing a monster and flinging the monster's body parts in many directions.

Wherever the parts landed, people sprouted up, and became the various plateau tribes. The site of the killing, where Coyote stood with the monster’s heart, became the birthplace of the Nimiipuu people.

China isn't stupid, it knows from Facebook and related products, twitter that people in the West just share every iota of information about their lives, lap up every piece of tech that can collect information as it is seen as 'helpful', they know this information will be available on the open web at some point, or stolen and made available.

If they are using TikTok to spy on people then they are just taking advantage of how we behave rather building tools to spy on us.

As Oracle employees review TikTok’s code to see if they’re spying for the Chinese government, they do so while watched by cameras recording for TikTok upon request of the Chinese government.

This is basically a puzzle that’s solved itself. 😂

My netbook is too slow to display that youtube page properly, but if we make everything about Trump, we are clearly missing a few points.

What I have learnt from here, is that the GOP is toxic in general, Ron DeSantis in Florida and his policies, the Supreme court overturning Roe vs Wade, GOP states wanting to remove rights from Trans citizens and esp from children and young people. And don't mention their apparent climate denials.

All this is a brewing cauldron of hate, so if Trump died tomorrow, his supporters in MAGA would remain, his repblican candidates friends support him, so will carry on with similar policies.

America is clearly broken, polarised on issues around race, religion, trying to move forward but at the same time having to face up to the harsh reality of its history and slavery and racism.

To many, in the US, the bible is really important, the bible is a collection of books and other texts, so the points in there about being gay are probably open to interpretation, does it REALLY condem same sex relations,

'Thou shalt not love another man' can be interpreted as such if you are male, it can also be interpreted that as a woman should only love one person. We will never know what the writers 2000 years ago actually meant.

These texts are very MALE centric too.

The US needs to decide on where it wants go, the sort of country it wants to be, find its place in the 21st century.

@br00t4c

I have no idea who this guy is, but he just seems like another crank out try and convince the world that his insignificant life is important to the world

WRT what is going on we need to change the last verse of Revolution by the beatles.

But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao

Change this like to
But if you go carrying pictures of Donald Trump

You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow
Don't you know it's gonna be
All right, all right, all right
All right, all right, all right
All right, all right, all right
All right, all right

Seems to fit in perfectly, lets hope they were right when they said it is 'gonna be all right'

For years, the media built up Elon Musk and got the public to buy into the myth of his genius. Now the truth of who he is can’t be hidden and changing how they cover Musk isn’t enough.

The media failed us. They not only need to inform the public about the harms of Musk’s empire, but change how they cover the entire tech industry so another grifter can’t replicate his rise. They owe us nothing less.

[Sarcasm] What is a blue screen? I have been using Linux based OS's for about 20 years, so the only time that has produced a BSOD type display was when I set up a BSOD screensaver.

@HuffPost

From a safety viewpoint being seated on public transport is probably a lot safer.

As for giving up seats, in the UK we have seats that are priority for elderly, disabled, these are usually near the front of the seating area, If a child is in a buggy / stroller then their parent can use that area. But if a wheelchair gets on then they can use that area, buggy / stroller must be folded.

I am not sure what happens if a disabled child is in a buggy / stroller, I would hope common sense would kick in in that rare situation.

@HamonWry

Well at least with X we don't need to be on there or even follow Trump, everytime he posts it ends up as main headlines.

The world is burning, penguins are dying in huge numbers, the environment is in serious crisis, but despite all that Trump is news the media think we all want to hear about.

Trump is back on the dead bird site.

One more reason that I’m happily staying with Mastodon.

I agree on mobiles / cameras, I help make video of my local american football training, if I watch with my eyes, I see far more than I do through a camera lens. So I wonder if those people who thrust their phones in front of them at concerts etc are actually absorbing everything around them, the music, excitement of the audience etc, or if they are just there in person and making selfies so they can get social media likes.

I guess there is a difference between active and passive attendance.

@markmccaughrean

I think you are very lucky to be there at the time, Must be great to have seen bands before their careers, beatles, stones, queen, etc
