keep in mind that #RussiaIsATerroristState , which is why the cost of helpring Ukraine to defeat #Russia is small compared to the damage a not defeated #Russia would mean to the civilized world. Says the Finacial Times.

Oct 6 EWE: UK — The UK government has “misrepresented” the Climate Change Committee (CCC) by wrongly claiming it said we would need a quarter of our energy to come from fossil fuels by 2050, scientists have said. “This is the CCC’s model, and one would have expected the government to have consulted the committee about the figure before circulating it. It is another example of the government failing to consult the experts.” #ClimateDenial https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/oct/06/ministers-misrepresented-uk-climate-advisory-body-say-scientists

I've heard reports that users on #Lemmy aren't able to interact with #WriteFreely blogs. Can anyone help test / verify that something is up so we can fix?

Woah, awesome.

> When two ions passed by each other without colliding, some of their virtual photons interacted and turned into real photons with very high energy. These photons then collided with each other and produced electron-positron pairs, which were detected by the STAR detector at RHIC. The scientists analyzed more than 6,000 such pairs and found that their angular distribution matched the theoretical prediction for matter creation from light.

I used to watch Sabine Hossenfelder because her #science videos were so on point and down to earth, especially regarding quantum stuff. But her #Capitalism is good video is a crock of shit. She doesn't deny the problems with it but excuses them because they haven't done it right (and doesn't really explain how to do it right because her rhetoric is self contradicting). Seriously, creators on #YouTube need to stay in their lane and talk about things they actually know about instead of alienating their viewers with BS. Here's a really good breakdown on why her argument is bad: https://youtu.be/fqlzy9Bqyjc?si=BK0iMoie1tqBeZfC

Mortality for birds from collision with buildings is much higher than most folks realize. Although it’s worth noting that the toll is still vastly lower than deaths from cats.

Data from U.S. Fish & Wildlife. Also, bc it needs to be stated - this is not a post against cats. /2

"Today’s Nobel Peace Prize, awarded to Narges Mohammadi, is an important reminder that the rights of women and girls are facing a strong pushback, including through the persecution of women human rights defenders, in Iran and elsewhere. This Nobel Peace Prize is a tribute to all those women who are fighting for their rights at the risk of their freedom, their health and even their lives." -- statement from UN Sect'y-General António Guterres
