@joedoudna

We need to stop child abuse in the first place by knowing what to look for within how a child may behave, what they say, do etc. So we can intervene and stop abuse happening.

This goes for

Sexual
Physical
Emotional
Neglect
and now bullying

All indicators of abuse, better child protection training and people reporting but once reported it leads to a child being safeguarded and not due to lack of action allowed to slip through the system.

Children need to know if the ask for help they will get help

Adults need to know if they take a disclosure or have a concern this will be acted on when passed on

gov.uk/government/publications

Part 1 is mandatory reading for those of us working with under 18's in the United Kingdom.

Abusers need to know that the law Wil come down on them with FULL FORCE

Getting the balance between protecting children from abuse, protecting activists in oppressed countries from their government agencies and being able to fight conspiracy theories is much harder, we need encryption to protect minority groups but that same tech is used by criminals to share images of abuse for example.

With child abuse we use better child protection
with conspiracy theories we should perhaps use education
with online fraud, better awareness so people avoid being a victim

At the same time lets raise awareness of why encryption is vital for some minority groups living in oppressive countries.

One of the reasons we need to target people traffickers causing more misery , rather than trying to stop people on small boats crossing bodies of water (e,g English channel) the traffickers are the issue and as you said this trafficking of children is linked to child abuse and the production of child abuse imagery.

Pictures of the Day: Mudskippers serenade a dancing companion

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/…

This couple of comical fish seems to be serenading a third one that's dancing. Dancing Mudskipper by Leo Liu of Singapore shows three mudskippers, amphibious fish that live in mudflats and connected mangrove ecosystems, and is a runner-up in the Mangrove Photography Awards 2021

If we keep cutting down rain forests, where some monkey species live, who knows if we make one extinct, we could end up wiping out
the one species that has the ability to stop the next global pandemic.

@pluralistic

Education is the key, we need to ensure that children know how to write a piece of text, that needs research to complete but also to cite their sources from early on.

Teach using examples of what is good / bad let them contemplate which is good / bad / somewhere in the middle. So they are empowered to decide.

Even if someone has the title Dr or Professor, can they still be trusted? how did they get that qualification/ title, from whom, where, how, what research have they published, who as peer reviewed it,

All possible steps to decide if a particular piece of information is trustworthy or not.

@pluralistic Lets just get people on to the fediverse and not sell the fediverse as a holy grail of perfection but a platform where every user has power in their own hands.

Fundamentally: if we question whether Facebook ads work, we should also question whether the disinformation campaigns that run amok on the platform are any more effective.

Bernstein starts by reminding us of the ad industry's one indisputable claim to persuasive powers: ad salespeople are really good at convincing ad buyers that ads work.

@yogthos So true, one of the steps we can take is installing GNU/Linux on the old hardware and keeping it alive longer. Planned obsolescence is the enemy of the environment. A computer should last me 10 years or more. With GNU/Linux on it that is guaranteed to happen.

@echo_pbreyer Seems like the EU really does not like democracy and free speech, do they not realise that countries that have hard lined authoritarian regimes will probably abuse this sort of thing to crack down on opposition, How many opposition will simply vanish and end up dead as a result.

🇬🇧 Messaging providers such as Whatsapp should be required to review messages that are so far securely end-to-end encrypted. This is what the Legal Affairs Committee called for today in its opinion on the #DigitalServicesAct #DSA. This is how MEPs voted:

@yogthos@mastodon.social @selea Good thing that we are seeing cutlery made from bamboo, wood more avaialble rather than plastic, we need to now just stop selling plastic cutlery.

People are lazy hence disposable cutlery, why not just take normal metal cutlery to a picnic, take it home and wash it. Not difficult

Then again BBC tech news seems to suggest that the most popular search on Bing is google, which if true makes you wonder if some people have even 1/2 a braincell for intelligence.

@cantinto@eldritch.cafe The strength of the fediverse is that children can run their own instance (or parents could do) plus everyone can be part of the developmental processes we need to get that across.
