@ern@mstdn.social I felt the same way when I first joined but I've come to appreciate a more unfiltered view of things. I mute a lot of bots and block some people who post a lot of NSFW stuff, but I like that it's my choice to do so. I actually think the big instances should be more upfront about the fact that they block or silence half or more of all ActivityPub users.
@zleap @stux

@runcmd @Mikonos

The way I see it there are 2 options on blocking

Individuals have the power to decide who they block (and also unblock)

Someone else decides for you. which will probably never be 100 percent perfect.

Federation is empowering, kin the right hands that is a very good thing surely.

@mono Someone should hack both so they federate with each other

@yogthos@mastodon.social

We seem to have created a ' me me ' society, so long people are able to be the centre of attention they don['t really care about the plight of others.

To follow the pandemic or plight of migrants camp you need to be able to watch and pay attention to the news, granted too much of something makes you just think that is normal, but people who care enough will find a way to follow.

rt.gnu.org is going offline for server maintenance. it should be back in about a half hour.

@ern@mstdn.social @stux

I think you can as long as you release them.

@feditips should be able to help with this.

@ern@mstdn.social No problem we need to discuss so we can get it right.

TruthSocial, Fediblock, pol adjacent

As you may have seen in the news today, Trump's media team has set up their own social network "Truth Social".

What they aren't admitting is it's actually just a Mastodon instance with all the Mastodon branding removed, including all of the messages acknowledging that it is FOSS, as required by the software's free open source licence. This is breaking the terms of the licence, and is essentially stealing the software from the volunteer community which made it.

This kind of behaviour cannot be accepted by anyone who believes in FOSS. Keeping to the requirements of a FOSS licence is fundamental to building software together. If powerful people get away with stealing FOSS, people may be reluctant to build FOSS in the first place.

Hopefully someone will take legal action, but in the meantime we can block these instances in case they try to federate:

I have screenshots and peer tube videos (silent) that cover some of these features.

@ern@mstdn.social Yes, this is the problem, which is why the hide images feature is useful. It would be a good idea to make sure people know how to use the safety features before they start.

@stux @ern@mstdn.social

I am going to contact my local police and crime commissioner. Explain the situation that we would like some mental health / safeguarding charities on here and see if she can help or has contacts.

@ern@mstdn.social @stux They are more likely to join an instance set up specifically for that. so +1

@domodak Thanks

Always useful to have a range of tools for this.

@zleap

It’s kinda intended as a competitor to services like Google Translate.

And - to roughly paraphrase one German user on Reddit - “At least when it comes to translations between German and English their results can be used for more than just posting screenshots of them as meme pics on Reddit.”

But be careful: The free version adds something amongst the lines of “Translated with DeepL.com” below your (longer?) texts.

Make sure to always delete that beforehand.
