Are there any free and open source tools that can handle facial recognition ?
If schools can run the software 'in house' it could make a good project for a student tech team to look at the technology.
All data then stays inside the school .
The debate could then turn to , not about the technology but who controls it.
Kids in the UK are paying for school lunch using facial recognition.
“This is highly sensitive, personal data that children should be taught to protect, not to give away on a whim."

IIRC second life allowed people (even via hacks ) to walk around naked, and probably engage in sexual activity.
Given facebook can't get a grip on any of its platforms, having a 4th just adds to the car of worms with regard to safety for ALL ages that is being opened up here.

No problem, you're welcome.
@thor @jessica@mk.absturztau.be Tech is fine as long as you are in control, in many cases tech seems to control the user.
On Oct 26, we sent a formal letter to Truth Social’s chief legal officer, requesting the source code to be made publicly available in compliance with the license.
According to AGPLv3, after being notified by the copyright holder, Truth Social has 30 days to comply or the license may be permanently revoked.

@thor Yeah, i am sure shops are going more electronic so they don't have to deal with people directly. Kinda sad state of affairs really.
People are so used to exploitation being normal that it feeds in to business practice.
@thor Indeed, I think people have lost the art of face to face communication, reading peoples facial expressions understanding how people are feeling.
@thor +1 to that, i use fedi on netbook + desktop, when they are off, i can't check / see any messages till i log back on.
perhaps it is the technology that is the issue, mobile phones = 24 hour contact
@thor So what is the fediverse then? , social media or something else.
Perhaps centralised social media is like say an addictive drug
Where as here on the fediverse it is like a non addictive substance.
end of the day social media perhaps reflects the user base.
@thor This is my thinking
By being ON facebook and knowing what is going on in terms of abuse, knowing the mental heath problems and now knowing from internal documents the y see children as untapped weath make
How can people stay on that platform at all..
By leaving you send a strong message. Perhaps by joining the fediverse you embrace a different way to do things.
By joining a similar platform to facebook who see users data as something to be collected then is that any better.

@ravi@floss.social is looking for some promo / flyers for fedi so have sent a link to my blog post.
@ravi@floss.social @praveen @info_activism
There is this
https://personaljournal.ca/paulsutton/fediverse-flyers
As I put a link on my website plus (which is based on the info on JoinMastodon)
@ravi@floss.social @praveen
The digital detox kit from @info_activism are good having a link to those or some printed out means that when something happens e.g the current facebook rebrand or more whistleblowing you can offer people an alternative
sure we can use #DeleteFacebook which I do but along side that I use join mastodon and #TheYearOfTheFediverse
So i am providing a lnk to alternatives.
@ravi@floss.social @praveen
Having a flyer or resource or issue (e.g new article) that can spark a conversation helps too. grab the moment and start that conversation.
