Next time you think the US wage and employment system is unfair and doesnt pay a living wage just remember this... you can spend a year in your moms bawsement learning programming and reading books and then go get an entry level job for 40k - 50k, and by the end of 4 years (presuming you continue to refine your skills) will easily be able to rake in 100K a year.... all with no diploma or formal education, just your own hard work.

You can't even get that in most of europe... america is a pretty damn good place to move up if you bother to invest in your own skills.

@thor best to be confident, i watched a video good is good enough, so you need to let go of something and publish ( or in the video context submit the assignment) or you will never finish anything.

@thor I guess if you want someting enough you go and figt for that.

Geoge Harrison found the other Beatles were not interested in one of his songs, so he got Eric Clapton to help.

They took note when Clapton walked in to Abbey road studios..

song "While my guitar gently weeps"

@thor That is how the beatles started, Brian Epstien found out about them when asked for a copy of My Bonnie, early single (got to 3 in German charts)

I guess once you haver material it is a case of getting it out there. Blogs are probably better for that.

@thor I write blog posts, mostly now, but i want to support people if I can.

I am sort of doing this here.

@thor This is from the Open University

open.edu/openlearn/education-d

so writing to help students on OU degree courses mostly, but some of the tips on planning and creating outlines could be usefu

@thor There is a course on open learn on essay and report writing skills, I will try and dig out the link as I am sure you can download the pdf of the course.

it is free anyway

@thor I think that is a good approach , get ideas down on paper so you can remember them and go through later to try and come up with a longer essay based on those thoughts

You may end up with 1000s of page s of notes, I am sure some of the great authors of the past had to do that when coming up with characters for stories.

@thor You don't need to be young to do good writing, write about what you know about and what you care about,k it is much easier.

I tend to be really bad at writing a personal statement for a job, but I can say write about other subjects, so I can probably write about a new science discovery and cite a article on say science daily,

Just go for it it may take few drafts but have an outline of what you are writing about

@fsfe@mastodon.social I tried to search for @fsfe@peertube.social on diode.zone but was unable to find it. I have shared your new video on my blog, so it should also federate here too.

Hope this helps

I am trying to suggest that if we don't defend what we have, then what we use will be open to abuse.

@thor @zleap @write_as @writefreely I find it a reaction to companies and governments that keep their algorithms and data ‘secret’ and the abuses that inevitably result. Hard to miss over time in an industry optimized for pattern matching.

@thor @writefreely @mcduquesne @write_as

Well good point but if they get away with saying Mastodon is propitiatory then what is next Pleroma, Peertube, ? People will just walk over us if we let them.

@thor @writefreely @mcduquesne @write_as

I use Debian, it works, granted I use non free version on my netbook because that is the only way the wifi works, and getting an expensive wifi dongle is hardly a financial priority right now.

There are lots of really cool things being done with free software,, so that is what we should celebrate I guess, but at the same time protect the licensing,

Think about the AGPL and the fact trumps new social media was just mastodon, he abused the AGPL so people are defending it, I think that brings the issue closer to home, as we all use Mastodon.

@thor @writefreely @mcduquesne @write_as

Yeah I don't understand the source code either, i guess it is there if we want it.

@dsfgs @thor @writefreely @mcduquesne @write_as

One reason I like it here because the fedi sees me as a user, and not just a pawn to generate income from data and clicks.
