Hello! Trying out this thing, so far I have no idea what I'm doing but here's some art 😀

Time for me to shamelessly plug my own instances.

I run a local Vancouver-focused instance at vancity.social. Registrations are open if you're from Metro Vancouver or British Columbia.

I also host a single user instance on my own domain at atomicpoet.org. Registrations are closed.

I don't know exactly how I'll be using Mastodon just yet, but here's an intro: Hi, I'm Celeste! I'm an environmental seismologist, mostly specializing in seismic signals generated by glacier processes. I'm currently a postdoctoral fellow at UCalgary, which I started after finishing my PhD at Caltech in June. I sometimes take cool pictures in the field as Queen Elsa for fun and for outreach, like this one near my current field site in British Columbia:

@eggynewydd

Same user name perhaps yes

I could be zleap@qoto.org and zleap@toot.wales, if both accounts follow each other then users can interact with either.

Is it possible to be on more than one Mastodon server with the same account?

Just a reminder for all new Twitter newcomers. Please, when you register on a server that has premoderation enabled, fill in a REASON FOR JOINING field. It will make the work of moderators easier and also will give moderators the idea that you are not a bot and some idea about your intentions on the server.

Thank you.

@stux All i ever get on LinkedIn is adverts and self promotion.

Problem is, if employers looking for staff don't actually monitor content properly then they miss out on people looking for work surely.

I keep seeing people say Mastodon is nothing like Twitter. And they’re right.

Mastodon is an echo of the old internet, it’s decentralised, chaotic. What you get depends on your sysadmin. You can’t search, everything has to be shared to you by a human. Networks split apart and rejoin. What you see is your unique connection to it.

Is this good? Maybe. But for me that’s the internet I grew up with. No algorithms, no targeted adverts, just human interaction, and it was glorious.

@HelenMWriter Lets see if we can build up communities here too.

#introductions
I’m a Welsh #author in exile originally from #Cardiff and now living in #Hampshire. My novels are psychological #suspense published by Darkstroke Books. The most recent The Girl in the Van is shortlisted for the Pageturner book award. It opens in #Tenby and action moves between Wales and London. I’m keen to network with other authors and readers as I had a great community over on the other place.

Your Mastodon feed won't improve through passive engagement. There is no algorithm to suggest and share what you liked.

You must actively follow different people to see what they boost, and you must boost for other people to see. Some people are from different servers. You will see more of what they see organically. You can also hashtag to increase visibility.

There is no quote retweet either. You have to actively engage and comment in the thread.

BBC: Twitter users jump to Mastodon - but what is it?
by @zsk
bbc.com/news/technology-635342

"Mastodon is not one platform. It's not one "thing" and it is not owned by one person or firm. All of these different servers link together, and form a collective network, but they are owned by different people and organisations." #fedinews #bbc

Are you new to Mastodon?

Do you need some help? A simple guide to how Mastodon works?

Check out my website, it answers lots and lots of questions you might have:

➡️ fedi.tips

It's written in non-technical language, and aimed at a general audience. If you're new here and feeling a bit lost, this is the site for you!

(There are also tips for advanced users in a separate section of the site.)

If you can't find the answers you want from the site, @ or message me 🙂

Just added the fixtures for the Football / Soccer world cup to my blog. Trying not to make a post every day, as that may just annoy followers. Hopefully between everyone here on we can create a dynamic conversation and boost interaction.

@edendestroyer

I think the best way for people to find you is to use tags

so then what ever you are offering.

What #hashtags can be used for people looking to offer their #freelance #services on #mastodon or looking for a #remote #job? Boost if possible

@jaz thanks, Jaz from a Welsh-in-exile newbie who’s just joined.

Well, guess I’m on Mastodon now. Retweet if you agree.

@patricia THis seems to be good for tutorials

If you want managed hosting then it seems Masto.host could be a good option.
