It seems the move to computers to replace human HR managers can inherit the same prejudice as humans as those same humans write the new systems.

So perhaps we need open source / free software HR software so it can be examined and improved.

A plain text CV, the software could simply be, this would probably work with laTeX, markdown and html

grep <string> file or read in a list of keywords

I little bit prouder today of my institution. MIT is hosting its own #mastodon server

mastodon.mit.edu

See you there soon

@albinokid

Tip 1: Use hashtags. There's no algorithm to suggest followers or shove posts into your feed in the hopes you follow someone.

Tip 2: Boost (re-post) toots liberally. *You* are the algorithm.

Tip 3: Use CW (content warnings / content wrappers) to discuss politics, the meta.

Tip 4: To create "threads", make the first post public and each reply "unlisted" to prevent clogging up your instance's feed.

Tip 5: Provide text descriptions, even just basic ones, when attaching photos or media.

Tip 6: Use the "report" features for moderating trolls so your admins can take action.

I think we should not worry too much and focus on what we are good at, develop what we have here, expand.

Given that all the services we run just work nicely together, it could be hard to compete. We can iron out the issues and just make things better.

@ethanz The US seems too polarised, if the Republicans win, then the Dems seem like they will be in stalemate for 2 years, bad for things that both sides actually care about.

@SteveCooke You can also reach out to a far more diverse groups, from other countries and cultures,. so get different perspectives I guess.

Let's start with a pic from one of our microscopes! Neuron expressing tagged actin (orange) and stained for map2 (blue), spinning disk confocal image 🔬

@SteveCooke Feel free to work on stuff here, the more variety the better.

Also throwing ideas at other people to help make sense of stuff is great, wish i could do that more with people offline too.

One of the things I used to use Twitter for was to help me get my thought-processes in order when writing research papers. There's something about the process of explaining research that's really helpful for writing-up that research. I'm finding Mastodon even more useful for that process. Perhaps because posts can be longer, & perhaps because the community here seems more hospitable to nerdy academics.

@kf

I agree here,

using pdfpc to view in Linux works well too

pdfpc -s -S file.pdf opens slideslow full screen.

Said it before, saying it again: #latex and #beamer kick butt when it comes to creating slideshows. Combined with something like pympress to show the stuff and you're good to go. And #nvim with some snippet engine to make life easier when editing.

If there's anybody out there running a large (*) Mastodon server and needs help/advice scaling, hit me up and I'll help if I can. Please contact on Twitter or LinkedIn as well as here. I'm not confident in my notification settings. Feel free to RT (I guess that's reToot) for reach.

(*) I.e. if you're just struggling to get one running for you and your buddies, that's not what I mean. But if you're suffering from thousands of new users driving up load, I might be able to help. I've dealt with one or two scaling issues in my time...

Loving that #Defaidodon gets so much traction, glad to have found a social media that caters to my #agriculture passion. As each day goes on #mastodon grows on me more and more

@freemo This is crazy eh, maybe Msck should buy facebook and we can be rid of that wreched platform too.

Holy hell the twitter exodus is **still** accelerating. The influx of new users is up about 33% from yesterday, our biggest day so far. We are now seeing over 1,300 new users every day on QOTO!

QOTO User Count
21,888 accounts +34 in the last hour +1,333 in the last day +3,843 in the last week

It will get worse if they get rid of even some moderation and restores what they call free speech as there will be less escape from it.

Shame our UK government is such as a pathetic shambles otherwise we could have the online safety bill law by now.

@bestforbritain @zleap It's fair enough, we are still on Twitter, but it's ever becoming a right wing hell hole!!

@zleap

Let me start by saying that I don't have the answers.

"No-one looks like me" is sadly a legitimate issue & doesn't only apply to job opps but also to people 'in nature'. This needs to change (& is) through movements like #MuslimHikers #FlockTogether #Black2Nature & others - often using social media
to organise.

The notion that access to nature is in any way not for absolutely everyone is, IMO, what needs to be dispelled. The challenge then is to facilitate this access
