In schools, we teach science through the lens of single subjects - biology, chemistry & physics - but it’s the ways they interact with economics, psychology & more that shape our world.

Ultimately, science is related to every significant challenge we face. It’s written into the agricultural policies that sustain us. It ensures we have clean drinking water & enough energy to keep the lights on. At is core, #science is fundamental to our health, safety & future. sheril.substack.com/p/a-disser

Other prisoners hanged during the execution on 30 December 1944 were: a Pole Piotr Piąty and Austrians: Ernst Burger, Rudolf Friemel and Ludwig Vesely.

They tried to escape from the camp on 27 October 1944.
The escape was thwarted by the betrayal of a bribed SS guard Johann Roth who instead of driving the prisoners out of the camp, went straight to Block 11.

30 December 1944 | 5 prisoners were hanged in Auschwitz after the evening roll-call. One of them was a Polish soldier Bernard Świerczyna.

3 days before his death he wrote those words inside his cell.

"I just wanted to be human,
not a soulless digits clump,
Tie existence to the future,
and decipher acts of past
I was captured by betrayal
that placed me behind those bars,
but my honor won't be broken,
even by the killing squad."

A plea to journalists covering the Fediverse:

If you want to pitch a story and the only people you can think of to talk to are Gargron and the Journa Host admin, please don't.

Instead, use the time you saved to learn more about how this network functions, who the people behind ActivityPub are (and what that even is), who the people keeping instances running are, who the people moderating instances are; you can even get your hands dirty by digging through the Mastodon GitHub issue queue and learn why exactly some design decisions ended up the way they did, it's all right there!

Mastodon is not off-brand Twitter. You do this entire community a massive disservice by painting it as such, and you do our profession a disservice by expressing a complete lack of curiosity about this community before you report on it.

Thank you.

I think people such as this are going to have to watch what they say / do. People are fed up of racism, anti-semitism mysogamy, miscandry, mis-information and such like and will be watching for a chance to hit back in the courts and finally seek justice or closure.

While platforms can say they promote free speech, the limits of this mean that this does not stop victims from seeking court action on what is said. The Sandy Hook hoaxer, was successfully sued by the families of those killed, this further empowers people to get together and hit back.

I think a lot of people who fought in either world war 1 or world war 2, never spoke about it upon their return. So it is not just in Germany, perhaps there are different reasons for not wanting to talk about it.

However fast foward to 2022, we should be able to talk about it, but perhaps we need safe forums to do so.

Remember when all cars came with cigarette lighters and ashtrays, but seat belts were kind of optional.

I cannot keep this to myself. There is a website (radio.garden) where you can listen to radio stations all over the world for free. No log in. No email address. Nothing.

When the site loads, you are looking at the globe. Slide the little white circle over the green dots (each green dot is a radio station) until you find one you like.

I have been listening to this station in the Netherlands and it absolutely slaps. I have no idea what they're saying but the music is fantastic.

It is now possible to verify your #OpenStreetMap-account on #mastodon

Via "Edit profile", copy the link at the bottom; add this link to your profile description on OSM.
Back on Mastodon, in the table with 'account metadata', add 'OpenStreetMap' on the left and a link to your OSM-profile on the right and save the changes. Mastodon will then verify your account and show the link as verified - as visible in the screenshots below.

Thanks a lot @tomhughes for making this possible.

@cybercareersblog

good instances to look for are infosec.exchange, hackers.town, chaos. social, hackyderm.io, defcon.social, treehouse.systems

most of the people on those domains know a fair amount about which way to power the pineapple

these are some of the more clueful folks out there in my opinion

There are a few if us that have been working on positive horizontal social/technological solutions to the current mess for 20 years.

We know these work at local level, and after working on the #fedivers for 5 years we know this works to scale horizontal tech.

So our #norhingnew creative job is to combine these, we have a slate of projects waiting for people to implement.

Are you going to help make this happen?

@grifferz @Jaden2@mstdn.social So there is little point in renaming a building unless people actually understand why, and this reason needs to be kept alive rather than being forgotten over time after the building name has changed.

@zleap @Jaden2 Renaming a building or replacing a statue is acknowledging a wrong and showing that you wish to right it. But in a lot of cases we aren't even there yet because some refuse to even discuss the history let alone act on it.

@pixelfed
On what basis is this legal action being threatened. What has the fediverse done?

@grifferz @Jaden2@mstdn.social

This is where the Internet can play a huge part in filling in the gaps. Why do we need to rename a building, because for example, the person it is named after was associated with slavery, we should keep the building name, and get people to actually research the name and what that person did, good or bad surely.

If you rename a building, you can't erase what has happened anyway, so may as well learn properly about it.

+1 to learning basic first aid at least, by going down the formal face to face route for this the trainer can make sure your technique is right.

I did first aid in the summer and the Annie (the model thing we use for CPR) has a sensor that told you if your compressions were too fast or slow as it displayed a led light to indicate.
