DeSantis's expansion of his restrictions on same-sex instruction in schools to cover high school gives the lie to the idea it was about protecting sweet innocent children. washingtonpost.com/politics/20

Are we all secret digital hoarders? It's easy to think that thousands of family photos, numerous emails and forgotten screenshots are just floating around in the cloud somewhere. But in fact, data storage has a very real presence, one that comes with a significant carbon footprint: atmos.earth/digital-hoarding-c

The Verge has a new article about ActivityPub. And it's pretty damn good: theverge.com/2023/4/20/2368957

There's a number of quotes from me in there. I enjoyed being interviewed for this: David Pierce was a very thoughtful interviewer.

I have more comments than that, but I'll put them in a followup in this thread. In the meanwhile, go read the piece. It's nice to read some well informed journalism.

@coreyspowell

Agreed, as the commnetary said it was a test launch it was successful as it got off the launch pad, the fact it lasted 4 minuites is probably a bonus success. It is case now of analysing the data and building version 2, then having another go.

Oddly compared to Virgin One, which also failed, the company beind that has gone bust putting lots of jobs at risk, those employees will probably be snapped up by other companies linked to NASA. ESA, SpaceX.

That huge spike in fake executive accounts on LinkedIn over the past year is starting to make a lot more sense now. Researchers at ESET have an excellent post on research that ties the 3CX supply chain compromise to North Korea's Lazarus hacking group, but the most interesting detail (for me) was this bit:

'The Lazarus group’s Operation DreamJob involves approaching targets through LinkedIn and tempting them with job offers from industry leaders."

Here's a bit more:

ESET researchers have discovered a new Lazarus Operation DreamJob campaign targeting Linux users. Operation DreamJob is the name for a series of campaigns where the group uses social engineering techniques to compromise its targets, with fake job offers as the lure. In this case, we were able to reconstruct the full chain, from the ZIP file that delivers a fake HSBC job offer as a decoy, up until the final payload: the SimplexTea Linux backdoor distributed through an OpenDrive cloud storage account. To our knowledge, this is the first public mention of this major North Korea-aligned threat actor using Linux malware as part of this operation.

I agree, being complacent may easily hand him victory.

Stop mocking DeSantis’ performance in polls.

If anything happens and that previous bloated carcass can’t run, DeSantis will be the GOP candidate and the GOP will get in lockstep and vote for him.

Meanwhile, the Dems will trip over themselves to keep attacking their own candidate. As always.

Be extraordinarily careful what you wish for.

@briankrebs

Far too many people on Linked in just self promoting, if you try and contact people or connect with them, you pretty much don't get anywhere. E.g try and connect with the consultants at an employment agency you actually work with.

A good reason NOT to use the platform, I am sure there is the 'social' in social media for a reason.

Mass shooting. Do something about guns.
Republicans: No. It is a mental health problem.
Ok. Go to therapy, USD$350 a session. Health insurance will not cover it. Go bankrupt.
Let's reform health coverage and insurance.
Republicans: No.

Further, consider that there's a pattern to *which* children will be, by their familiy cirumstances, funneled to late-night McJobs; and which will instead have the luxury of sleep before the, say, AP exams.

I got my first job at age 14 as a grocery clerk (unless you count babysitting, in which case age 12). I don't have a problem with, say, apprenticeships. But it should be safe, OPTIONAL, and not a way to suppress adults' wages.

@atomicpoet

I agree with you here, there are many different services, so by talking about the fediverse generally we don't imply there is no other solution. We perhaps want people to be on fedi in their own way, so if you want to post pictures daily, you can set an account on Pixelfed, and federate, interaction is still possible.

I got the impression we were never out to destroy mainstream social media, we are here to provide an alternative for people, The way things are going mainstream social media will destory itself, twitter has a headstart, the metaverse seems to have stalled, some people are wising up to data collection,tracking, data sale etc and look to us.

@atomicpoet

I am using peertube, I did have a pixelfed account but I think the instance stopped working.

I am also using WriteAs on a personaljournal blog system.

@rabble @atomicpoet

Would they take in to account the fact that we are decentralised, the protocol is for communication between instances (If I understand it). People are free to set up fediverse instances that don't federate widely.

I do agree we need to push the general fedi more, but we are getting there.

The largest student protest in Florida's history will take place.

Students across the state will walk out of their classrooms to learn a piece of history banned by Florida's legislature, sign an active voter pledge, and enroll in a virtual African American history course.
