@starchy Doesn’t that just turn it into instagram or facebook? I thought the whole point was that tweets were public and could go in articles and stuff? No papers will reference tweets if their readers have to login again to see them.

Not forgetting the Fault lines in California, the big one has been predicted to be coming for some time now, so if or when that happens it could cause a huge set of problems.
While we can't do much about earthquakes just yet, other than hope buildings hold their own, but it is just an added factor, once it happens, we know that it will cause a huge migration and drain on other resources and no one seems prepared for this.
We have a hosepipe ban here in Devon, UK. Reservior levels are still low, so we need to preserve water resources, if we get another mild then hot spring / summer then that won't help.
I agree with you, I was just saying things like this end up with that accusation we are dumbing down, it gets rather tedious.
Just anticipating the inevitable
So yes, lets make science so that everyone can pick up a paper and understand what is written.
Prayers for you
Next speaker apparently has COVID so is presenting virtually (COVID is not over...)
Talking about Kepler-90, an 8(!) planet system, adds in radial velocity data to transit timing data. Sounds like there weren't any firm conclusions from this study, just a neat system (and I found this graphic hilarious and also quite powerful to show the problem with exoplanet systems generally: we're only probing a tiny part of them with current techniques!)
@eARCwelder 100% this. It's the very *structure* of Twitter and Twitter-like apps that encourages a certain type of user behavior that I view as fundamentally toxic.
For every person who is optimistic about Bluesky as a replacement for Twitter, I would challenge them to think about whether or not that team will overcome this fundamental issue with how Twitter / bluesky works.
(Maybe the team there will solve it?)
Agreed, :)

@supernovae @mekkaokereke @atomicpoet makes sense. The thing is safety is multilayered. It’s not as simple as a block. There’s a number of reasons why minority women do not feel safe. It’s always better to start there. Engage in good faith, be willing to be silent and just listen. It’s not about us or our feelings, it’s about them being heard and valued.

Good point, sorry ,

You have a good point here, we need to find a way to make it easier for people to set up / run their own instance, share block lists and share expertise so anyone from any background can create their own space based on the needs of the people they serve.
I made another post where I would really like to see more basic digitial skills courses at least mentioning the fediverse, we need to create demand so that will happen.
Once that happens we can also work on more advanced courses to help people run their own instances.

It feels like the common thread in all of this is moderation. It seems like PoC need a server that isn't managed by white folks. Because they're not going to get the moderation outcomes they deserve from people who don't share their experiences.
What would it look like to have some full-time black mods running some instances? Would that be useful?
@damonoutlaw Thank you, I really appreciate that!
@supernovae @damonoutlaw @mekkaokereke @atomicpoet Here's a list I put together of things I read and heard in case it's helpful. Haven't shared publicly til now, but feel free to share if helpful.

@davidslifka wow this is fantastic. Thank you for taking the time to put this together

Yes, this issue has been festering for years, we have reaped what we sowed decades ago, there was a time when a childs behaviour reflected on the parenting, it would have been highly humiliating to many parents back then if their kids behaved even a 1/10th as many do in 2023.
Progress, more like a massive backwards step.
To be fair many do a good job, and many succeed but those people pay the price in terms of being victims of how others behave.
It is such a shame that Iran is so closed off from the world, this country has so much culture and history they could make so much more of this, esp from students studying a wide range of subjects, tourism, research etc.
Hopefully one day the country will open up and in their own way embrace this, and sure I don't expect them to fully westernise, visitors should respect the laws of the country, but that is a small price to pay to be able to visit what looks like a wonderful, colourful country with fantastic history, that region owes so much to the world, e,g writing for one.
