Happy to chat informally about the role. Big challenges at the heart of Government and a chance to write national level policy.
Fair warning, it is *always* DNS!
I'm seeing chatter about people denying the fires are caused by climate change because they're believed to have been sparked by human activity.
This is such an incredibly bad take.
We've basically been living in a drought this year. We had minimal snowfall this past winter, and even less rain this spring, leaving forests drier than they've been... possibly ever.
On top of that, we've had two significant hurricanes in 4 years, killing a significant number of trees and leaving them to become exceedingly dry deadfall. Those hurricanes were driven by climate change.
Climate change has created the conditions where our actions that previously wouldn't have caused such disasters now will. Precautions that people spent a lifetime learning -- which were probably, at best, barely enough, and at worst, totally insufficient at the time -- now no longer apply. Things people are accustomed to doing now risk the health and safety of thousands.
Climate change has radically altered the risk associated with our actions. But people are not good at recognizing that. People are really awful at adapting to slow, invisible changes. People resent having to change their behaviours when they've never noticed those behaviours leading to harm.
I get that people want a scapegoat to drag through the streets and force out of town, but pointing fingers are a couple of people who may have failed to take the proper precautions this once doesn't do anything but distract from the part where we're firmly in the "find out" phase of dumping millions of years worth of stored carbon into our atmosphere in just a couple of centuries.
You could be the next person who didn't realize they weren't being responsible and create the next disaster. Don't fall for the "individual responsibility" bullshit.

What are you looking for exactly ?
This afternoon I spotted an immature hawk in our yard, near the edge of our pond. At first I thought it was an osprey, but its call sounded like the adult red-tailed hawk we see frequently.
It hopped down to the water + took a drink. Over the course of 45 min. it walked/hopped to the edge of the woods. It did not try to fly.
Periodically I could hear the adult hawk in the distance. Finally, the adult flew in low to the ground and "led" the youngster into the woods, out of sight. 🤞 🤎
So did this happen or didn't it ?
I just posted a new video with my solutions for mobile digital painting on GNU/Linux! It's not sponsored, about a refurbished 5 y/o hardware, and relatively low budget. 🙂

I am not sure what the solution to this is but:
1. Facebook are a law unto themselves (so nothing we or anyone can do will change that)
2. We can counter this by promoting the alternatives and mention facebook at a bare minimum, or perhaps refer to them as face**** it may mess up search algorithms (not sure)
3. Keep doing what we are doing here on fediverse, build communities, generate content, communicate and interact, make people feel they are missing out by NOT being here.
4. Keep the orginal post in mind, when deciding on what to do should face**** decide to set up their own AP services and try and join the fediverse, what are their intentions, we are here and care for privacy, they don't care about privacy.
Kathleen Stock: Protests at Oxford Union as talk goes ahead

Subject matter aside, surely university ( and actually education generally) should be about looking at alternative viewpoints and weighing up the evidence presented to form a point of view, this can change over time anyway.
If we were to give a talk on say the fediverse, we would cover a lot of ground about privacy but may have to be critical of what big tech is doing, as it is one of the reasons the fediverse was created as an alternative.
In the UK there has been a lot of students protesting and demanding refunds over teaching at University, I got the impression that a lot of university was self study, a lecture gives you a brief on a topic but you need to do a lot of reading and deeper research to learn more.
Schools provide a prescribed curriculum, so when people start uni, they seem expect the same level of teaching. Not sure this is how I interpret things.
As with many topics, a curriculum is out of date by the time you have prepared the lesson content, I can give you a lecture on Enceladus (moon of Saturn) and send you off to read recent papers which cover what has been discovered right now, as we keep finding new things.
@simon_brooke @strypey @lightweight
Agreed, but we need to give people the knowledge on how to learn from an early age, rather than prepping for exams. Teach people about problem solving, collaboration, fixing things, we should also be teaching about free / open source software and the culture of collaboration and sharing that comes with that.
The idea of collaboration extends across STEM and other subject areas too.
I am already doing that by sharing what is going on in the US. But +1 to this.

It is how Russia sees things, so NATO is supplying weapons so Ukraine can defend itself from Russian agression, if it looks like NATO is trying to remove putin it risks nato being acussed of actually attacking Russia and escalating things, Putin has already threatened to use nukes, (not sure if his generals will do so however). If some of these weapons (e.g drones) just happen to end up in the hands of Russian opposition groups and drones hit a few buildings in Moscow, is that really the fault of NATO, Nato can say we did not supply for that purpose (at least in public) while behind the scenes we can hi five each other and think good job.
