It's wild to me that there's currently so much panic & fear about what #AI *might* do to "destroy" humanity, yet - at the same time - so little attention to the way that human behaviors are already, knowingly, putting billions of people & global biodiversity at tremendous risk. 🌍 #climatechange

Examples of the kind of secondary abuse I've experienced personally from other admins on the Fediverse:

1. Telling a Jew that "it's not antisemitic"

2. Telling them that we should allow antisemitism because the original poster is part of another marginalized group.

3. Complaining about "weaponized antisemitism", usually through saying how often Jews complain.

4. Saying it's a safe space for all, but then telling a Jew "If you don't feel safe, you should leave"

5. Asking for more information about why something is antisemitic, then ghosting on them when they provide it

6. Saying that it might have been antisemitic, but that a Jew said something in a mean way, so it cancels out.

7. Finding a quote from a Jewish extremist group, or claiming that they "need to ask their Jewish friend" before accepting that the speech is antisemitic.

8. Whatabouting the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and saying Israelis (or all Jews) should be quiet unless this is "solved".

Welcome to the fediverse. I am sure people can explain this better, if you consider the likes of facebook, twitter and I guess reddit being centralised, there is one controller, that one controller calls the shots as to what happens.

With fedi, there are multiple services, hosted on instances, each instance is owned by individuals, all these services can talk to each other. Similar to how you get e-mail hosted by different people but you can communicate with anyone using e-mail regardless of service owner.

I think what we want to build here, goes back to the 1990s at least in terms of people were hosting sites themselves, there were no BIG corporations dictating things or monopolising the internet, lots of search engines for example, plus different services web, e-mail, usenet (nntp), gopher etc. So in a way back then it was kinda disjointed but people were in control more. If I understand the reddit situation, people were on there, using 3rd party apps to connect, then it was decided to change how things worked, and people were locked out, just a top down decision which has backfired in terms of people just leaving.

So yeah, back then it was fun, I remember having small irc (internet relay chat) servers, for my local lug, and different members also had them so we all connected to gether, so it did mean 1 server 1 user for them but they were learning how to run irc services, but you could do that back then, hang a web server from your internet connection, or more so if you had something like isdn (128k) rather than the fastest dialup (56k). Service providers were more hacker friendly in thast respect.

So on fedi we can kinda of get some of that back, collaborate and do what we want (within reason) in terms of running little or perhaps larger services.

Hey #RedditBlackout / #RedditStrike peeps,

Once again Louis Rossman knocks it out of the park with his summary of the #Reddit situation. In short, u/Spez thinks "You are noise". Nothing but noise, of no value. Lets keep up the strike and show him he's so so terribly wrong.

Trans women athletes have no advantage, report finds

thepinknews.com/2023/01/26/tra

A new report has found trans women do not have any advantages over any other women, when competing in elite sport, if existing rules are followed.

Is it ever a good idea to speed things up when it comes to the law, things take time and every iota of evidence on eithe4r side has to be subject to the court, cut corners and you risk giving the defense room to argue an unfair trail or similar. or you just risk making costly errors.

Special counsel Jack Smith wants a "speedy" trial of Donald Trump in the classified records case.

NPR says many factors could prevent that. Here's a look at what's next in the case: npr.org/2023/06/14/1182182584/

I just read All Boys Aren't Blue, by George Johnson, which I understand is a frequently banned book.

I thought it was mostly a love letter to his wonderful and supportive family.

It did depict how he was molested by his older cousin and assaulted in college.

The man never had consensual sex with another man until he was 25. It did describe that encounter.

Hi #OpenScience folks. We're making excellent progress with our Research England funded project on computational reproducibility. We've now made 5 manuscripts reproducible using Markdown. See examples here:

github.com/AMTdeBruin/Bilingua

github.com/bakerdh/SizeAdaptat

The question now is what we should do next. We have a really nice pipeline for automatically building markdown files on Github. But the process of making papers reproducible is time consuming.

@mmiasma @wasootch

Above all it described a boy and young man who tried hard to fit into the Black culture around him but never quite did.

It's aimed at YA readers. I think that's an appropriate audience because, let's face it, kids are molested, young men are assaulted, and queer people struggle to find their place in life.

Kids need to be able to find books that have situations they can relate to.

Tragically, on April 30, 1926, during a practice flight in Florida, Coleman's plane went into a nosedive and crashed, resulting in her untimely death. The African American community deeply mourned her loss, and her legacy endured.

Why would people even be considering splitting up native American families, this is 2023 not 1823.

The fact SOCUS is upholding laws to keep families together suggests policies to do the opposite.
