"Billionaires now hold so much of the world’s wealth, their apologists argue, there’s no choice but to rely on them for philanthropy. But we can’t take our eyes off the ball: We need to tax the ultrarich out of existence."

In an age of massive global inequality & billionaires supporting authoritarian politicians & doing precious little about climate disruption, it's time for global wealth tax

That makes far more sense to me. But is an interesting area to look at.

@zleap @humanisttrek You're right, it doesn't matter. I agree with @humanisttrek: scientifically arbitrary notions of "correct" and "incorrect" are used even today to include or exclude groups of people.

Modern linguistics has moved away from prescriptivism (telling people what is "correct" English) and toward descriptivism (figuring out how people actually use English -in its many variants).

In the end, the only objective measure of "correctness" of language is how well it conveys meaning.

So change sides and put an and to all this suffering once and for all

@kimhoar @brosandprose

A simple sit down discussion could have probably solved the whole issue quickly.

On the other hand if kids want to play this way, perhaps we should report them for any offensive comment they make, and not back down.

Which would really in a lot of cases be OTT, could be solved by talking.

@kimhoar @brosandprose

It was simple when I was at school, but now clearly more complex or seems that way. I really think there was an over reaction, the context to this that this teacher, who normally teaches history was just stepping in.

So in this article we have 11 or 12 year old children with gender dysporia making a complaint that ruins the career of a dedicated teacher, over making a simple statement.

As an archaologist you excavate (which I think is probablyt the right term) a skeleton, look at the bones and try and work out if it belonged to a male or female.

@eribosot @humanisttrek

Thank you for this, really helpful. Firstly the fedi comes up trumps when it comes to intelligent and civilised responses to what is clearly a emotive subject.

So to conclude on this, I guess it does not matter if we use
'To boldly go', or 'To go boldly', however I would guess the latter then perhaps needs a comma making it To go, boldly (or does it).

I just know people go rather irked by the original English. However I think the use of To go boldly may have had more to do with Patrick Stuart being a shakesperian actor too,

I just try and say or write what makes sense. No one is perfect. If we strive for 100 percent perfection then I, certainly would never write anything.

When you end up having to buy a five year old version of hardware to run open source firmware that's under constant improvement with features you need, because the more recent versions of that hardware are crippled in ways that make running that open source firmware impossible, and so the older versions of the hardware are increasingly expensive and difficult to find.

One downside of working remotely is that when you have a day full of meetings, you still end up doing your job *while attending the meeting* because most meetings are 80% fluff you can ignore. But if you're in-person you have no choice but pay attention.

I say this is a downside because if you're not paying attention then you can miss that important 20%. And it's *extremely* stressful. 😅

@rose_alibi

Yes that is reasonable, you would think they would let you know eh. Can you put a notice on the door to say due to no show - tour cancelled, or something.

@rose_alibi

I think an hour is reasonable unless someone has contacted you to let you of about the delay, things happen, courtesy costs nothing on their part.

Apparently Facebook is developing a Twitter-rival which may be called "Threads".

Seems apt.

@TechDesk

So what are Discord doing about it, and what lessons can the fedi learn from what is happening. ?

Content Warning: Online Child Exploitation

Discord has been a hub for online gamers since 2015. In recent years it has become a destination for criminals looking to abuse and exploit children, by taking advantage of the platform's young user base and decentralized structure.

I was at a meeting the other day, it was suggested if I want to teach IT content, I need to really dumb it down. I on the basis of the conversation posted here, I am going to need a strategy to explain the fediverse as the anology for e-mail to explain decentralisation may not be dumbed down enough

Wish me luck

We need more people in the , and many other industries.
