I said the other day they are using duct tape, I wasn't too far out with that. :D
Another federal judge issues another (temporary) injunction against another state law making it a crime to give minors "harmful" books and allowing anyone to challenge any material a library has that they don't like, this time in Arkansas.
I'm glad there are judges who remember that we still have the First Amendment, even if state legislatures and authoritarian governors like Sarah Huckabee don't like anyone exercising constitutional rights other than having guns.

For decades, the U.S. exported jobs and imported products, while other countries surpassed us in critical sectors like infrastructure, clean energy, semiconductors, and biotechnology. Thanks to President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda – including historic legislation passed by Congress and signed into law by President Biden such as the American Rescue Plan, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS and Science Act, and Inflation Reduction Act – that is changing.
President Biden’s Investing in America agenda is mobilizing historic levels of private sector investments in the United States, bringing manufacturing back to America after decades of offshoring, and creating new, good-paying jobs, including union jobs and jobs that don’t require a college degree. His Investing in America agenda is rebuilding our roads and bridges using Made in America materials, built by American workers. And it’s transforming our country for the better – reaching...

@zleap @brewsterkahle I have worked with a great many people who suffer with debilitating, social anxiety - the library offers a form of connection without them feeling threatened /overwhelmed. Libraries offer a lifeline for those who have a appreciation of books, and so much more .
Not all libraries are the same, hopefully the good libraries will adapt, thrive and continue to do a good job serving their communities.
I won't be voting Tory at the next election, I am sceptical if labour are any better but they are the better than the Tories.
If the Tories and Republicans get re-elected at their next respective election, then humanity is doomed.
It’s game over, because this decade is absolutely critical to averting complete #ClimateMeltdown. If these countries won’t play ball, many others won’t either.
Assuming most folks here completely understand this…so how do we get the rest of the US and UK to comprehend what is at stake and the power they absolutely must use at the ballot box?
Expert gaslighting.
GPLB: "Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he understood people would be “frustrated” by hearing about the level of profits for energy companies, but recalled the introduction of a windfall tax on energy firms during his time as chancellor.
He said: “We’re using that money to help pay for people’s energy bills.”"

Wow, that sate4ment really says something about how far we have come in nearly a year.
Can I propose we designate the day Musk took over twitter as Fedi Expansion day as that one act has done more to boost the Fedi than anything else.
BBC is testing being on Mastodon, says fediverse better fit for public purposes than Twitter or Threads. As X (the former blue bird) stumbles, many media outlets consider leaving for good.

We still have a lawsuit going throuigh Uk courts against car companies who manipulated emissions results tests to make it look as if emissions were lower.
Can we not trust ANYONE in 2023, as it seems we can't
A good reason to have fully open standards, fully open and free software so that people can examine what have made, and make sure it does exactly what you are claming, of course feel free to hide behind patents, and NDAs it suggests you're hiding something.
Tesla exaggerated EV range so much that drivers thought cars were broken
The directive to present the optimistic range estimates came from Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk, this person said.
"Elon wanted to show good range numbers when fully charged," adding: "When you buy a car off the lot seeing 350-mile, 400-mile range, it makes you feel good."

A real fascinating story of how an 81-year-old former Air Force chap had come forward to announce he saw pulsars well before they were discovered but could not talk about it for half a century until the military instruments he observed them with were decommissioned and de-classified.
In a nutshell, he was using radar for a Ballistic Missile early warning system and noticed a pulsating signal showing up in his data, which was rising 4 mins earlier each day. He asked astronomers after writing down the location, and it was the Crab Pulsar!
The woman who discovered pulsars, Dame Prof. Jocelyn Bell Burnell - agreed with his discoveries.

Sent this to our team's slack channel overnight, and my supervisor told me he and another one of our team's astronomers were the folks that the Air Force chap got in touch with!
Small world, and a nice Aussie connection!

As mentioned before, a library is more than just a place for books, it is a place to meet, socialise, swap ideas, study alone or with other people. A place to get hold of journals, magazines and much more.
Use your local library or lose it, when budget decisions are made based on footfall and usage.
